Do colleges prefer to see high AP scores and average or below average grades (say, a 5 on the exam and B in the class) or low AP scores but stellar grades?

Grades are more important: colleges don't even see your scores if you don't send them.

a typical college answer would be: high grade and high AP, YAY...

Hehe, yeah, what bearcats said is what I've heard every admissions officer say when that question is brought up at the intro session for college visits.

But otherwise, I'm going to have disagree with a778999 and say that AP scores are more important. The major purpose of the course is to prepare you for the test, and I would seriously wonder what is going on in the classroom if a student who gets an A in the class cannot manage good results on the test, seeing how you can get the equivalence of a D point-wise in most subjects and still have a score of 5.

Besides, the score is what gets you placement, not your grade in the class, so it seems as if they view scores more highly as a testament to how well you know the material.

Looking at the score and placement comes after you've been admitted. Your grades in your classes and GPA are far more important for admission.

Grade for Admission.
AP Score for Placement.
