Which is harder to get into: NYU Stern or USC Marshall?

I recently got my acceptance letter from USC for Marshall-business, but honestly, my top choice would be NYU Stern (marketing). And seeing so many people here on CC getting into Stern, and not me, has me worried now.

Now my counselor and several other people have noted similarities between NYU and USC as east-coast/west-coast equivalents, but for the undergraduate business program, which is harder/more-competitive to get into?

I'm assuming Stern?

-Double legacy (both parents Stern MBA)
-2210 SAT (740R, 680M, 790W)
-3.5 unweighted, 4.0 weighted (rank 25%) in ultra-competitive public school. I'm thinking the GPA is going to kill me :(
-Professional paid marketing internship in NYSE-listed company, CEO recommendation letter
-Blah blah blah... extracurriculars/essays and everything else fine IMO

It's just that before discovering CC, I (and my parents) have always thought that I could get into Stern. But seeing such high stats here etc. makes me wonder... at least I got into USC, which I'm happy about. No complaining here :)

But still, love NYU!

Stern > Marshall, and I'm in both =P and posting here. Plus look's like you have a great chace of getting in, nice eca, your weighted gpa's fine, and double legacy. They'll note that your school's competitive and allow for the grade deflation.

Haha, we something in common. I'm a double legacy too, though my parents are GSAS graduates. And since NYU basically admits that it gives advantages to legacies (on their FAQ somewhere, they answer "maybe" to the question, haha), I think you have a good shot. Besides, your SATs are good, and if your school is competitive, they'll take that into consideration. Your recommendation letter sounds impressive, by the way. Yeah, the whole internship thing is much more impressive than my app (I've done nothing business oriented), and I got in, so I think you'll be fine. :)

If you still have doubts, take a look at this:

https://www.collegedata.com/cs/admissions/admissions_tracker_result.jhtml?method=submit&previousPageSection=page_admissions_tracker

I'm not sure if you have to register for the site or not to see it, but it's free, so no harm in doing so. It's a list of stats for NYU applicants this year.

ETA: Um, for some reason, the site leads to a Columbia stats page. Okay, go to www.collegedata.com, then to admissions tracker, and then put in NYU.

All right, thanks! Hoping for a thick envelope from NYU soon... :)

Stern is known for its finance. Kellogg (sp?) at Northwestern is known for marketing.

But Stern's marketing program is still fine, right? I don't know what that's supposed to mean.

nope, if you want marketing, Stern is not your place.

Remember, it's Leonard N. Stern School of Finance

The following is a review from a senior in recent businessweek ranking:

[quote]
I should not have gone to Stern for marketing. My whole reason for attending Stern was the academic reputation, coupled with the location and opportunity for great jobs. However, I was very diasppointed to find that the school pays 95% of its attention to finance majors, and that if you decide not to be a finance major, you're mostly shunned and forgotten. For every six finance job notices I receive, I receive one in the marketing field. Unless you're dead-set on being a finance major, I would not recommend this school.

25% of the Businessweek ranking is based on student review, and our senior write quite bad review for the school :)

I thought it was the Leonard N. Stern School of Business... :)

Although I do agree somewhat -- from what I've seen here on CC, it does seem like the majority of Stern students are finance majors. Probably because it does pay well if you find the right job.

You know, I was just looking (few days ago with parents) at that 2007 Business Week review of Stern, and was surprised about what that student wrote. It's funny, because I thought I knew a lot about NYU, but had NO idea marketing took such a back-seat to finance.

This got me thinking: even though I put down marketing in the application as my intended major at Stern, is it possible to switch to finance instead?? I hope so... just to keep the options open.

you can change your major by clicking your mouse three times at advising website.

I think you can even change your major once a week.

Oh! I didn't know that.

i'm changing from marketing to finance if i go. actually in fact i'm doing both

xtefii, so it looks like we are both in the same boat! Have you heard back from NYU yet?

yeah, i got the university day reception a few days back. i really just want my official acceptance letter.

You're willing to change your area of study to accommodate the school? That sounds back asswards to me.

Hey! I’m a senior whose getting ready for college. Can you guys evaluate me and tell me your opinions on whether you think i can get into Stern or not? I’m debating over whether I should be doing Early Decision or not… would my chances be higher if I did?

Cumulative GPA: 3.45 (unweighted)
I take the IB diploma program, so I’m pretty sure my GPA would get weighted depending on the schools. I know my GPA isn’t the best, and this is my GPA so far from Junior year. If I go early, then this is what they would be seeing. If I apply normally, my GPA this semester I know would be higher, but then again the acceptance rate would go down if I apply with everyone else… right?

My GPA for Junior Year was 3.57 and 3.625

Extra-Cirriculars
-President of MUN (Model United Nations)
-President of SBC (School government)
-Founder of the Speech and Debate Club
-Varsity basketball
-Lucidus Pulpa Head Designer (Lucidus Pulpa is our school magazine)
-Service hours
-Honors orchestra festival participant (three years)

SAT scores

SAT I
Math - 750
Critical Reading - 700
Writing - 800
Total: 2250
(Best sittings combined)

SAT II
American History - 760
Math IIC - 710

Are my chances okay? Do you think I will be able to get in? I’m hoping my admission essay, other activities and SAT scores make up for my GPA. I also attend an international school in Japan. Thanks for the help!

aite thank you all for the unconditional support and help!
my sat was actually a lot lower than i expected and i only made it to jv basketball… but thank you guys for all the comments!
