Which is more prestigious between Warwick and University College London (UCL)??

I'm applying to those two schools cause i know they're both excellent schools but i'm the type of guy who's very keen about prestige. I know they're not oxford or cambrisge but they're the closest rivals. which do you think has more "wow" factor? thanks

well...what are u going to do in uni? Warwick isnt that great in terms of rep i think...you'd prob be better of in UCL/LSE/Imperial...

I think UCL is generally considered to be a bit more prestigious than Warwick... but the gap isn't very big. Warwick is basically the best university outside of Oxbridge and London. It is very well respected by people who know something about education in Europe beyond Oxbridge, LSE and "Sorbonne" which doesn't even exist anymore lol.

I suggest you ask around in thestudent_room_ because most of the people in here don't know much about universities in the UK and continental Europe.

I would say UCL is far more prestigious than Warwick (except for Business related subjects). But if you want more prestigous unis in the UK than UCL that are not Oxbridge I would look at Imperial (applied sciences) and LSE (Social Sciences). And on a personal basis if I had to pick I would go to King's College London over Warwick (especialy for Law). This is not to say that Warwick is bad. It just is not as prestigious as UCL/LSE/Imperial partly due to the fact that it is so new.

Yeap...warwick is the new kid on the block. Doing well of course, but still a new kid. it also depends heavily on where you intend to work and get your degree to work for you in the future....

UCL.

duh.

but in all honesty i'd be perfectly happy at warwick.

imperial has a really nice campus and really great programmes in the sciences, but its really difficult to get into.

UCL is much more prestigious than Warwick

You might know this but Warwick Univeristy isn't all that near to the city of Warwick. It's a compact campus in a field in the middle of the countryside. Most of the students live in Coventry, which is the nearest large town. I don't really like cities and generally loathe London so I think I'd rather be at Warwick (I applied there as an undergrad but turned it down for Cambridge). But if you're the kind of person who loves the busy city life, I'm not sure Warwick is for you. It's worth thinking about as they are two very different environments.

Hi Cupcake,

How is Cambridge going? It is a really nice city/town. I decided to go to LSE in the end even though it is in London. LOL. Now being serious I like London but I would not want to live here after I finish my Master. Just out of curiosity how close is Hughes hall to the centre of Cambridge?

Saying University of London is going to get attention, but both ae solid for the UK market. For the US, you probably have to explain Warwick more but it shouldn't hold you back with big recruiters.

I already paid a visit both campuses. UCL is in the center of Central London and I realy think it's in the best location. Been to Warwick as well, a bus ride from the city of Coventry and it was also very nice but with less activity outside of campus compared to UCL, of course it's in London. While I was there, I was talking with some people and majority of them like 90% of them are telling me Warwick is FAR better. Take note -- FAR better. I'm applying for business and / or Economics programme.

If you're looking at it only in terms of prestige then UCL wins.

Yeah, with reference to what mabuhay said, Warwick is known for having a top class economics department. It is one of the top handful in the UK and I'm almost certain it's far better regarded than UCL in this area. In terms of overall university prestige, however, I think UCL still has the upper hand. Somebody planning to go back the US might do better to choose the best overall "brand name" (UCL in this case) because American recruiters probably have limited knowledge about how the UK universities stack up.

lol i just love how all these people defend UCL and not Warwick. I'm currently a Warwick EPAIS (economics, politics and international studies) student here right now. In terms of overall prestige UCL is better than Warwick because it has been around longer and its in London but if you want a quality education in subjects like economics, politics and international studies, business, law and etc I think Warwick is either tied for #1 or in 2nd or 3rd place

King - no1 disputed how good Warwick is.....i personally think its excellent (i'm applying there for 2007)
But OP asked about prestige, and UCL wins in that respect

^^^

I agree fully. I am also applying there for 2007, for economics. Thinking about applying to UCL too but they only have paper application which is a real pain in the arse.

Nooo
Who told you that they only have paper application?
You can apply online !!

King I agree with you regarding economics. Warwick is better. Not so sure about law. I would pick UCL if I was going for law. Noth are great unis though.

Actually you can't apply online, according to the Administrator of Graduate Studies, Ms Fauvrelle. After searching the website for quite a long time I emailed her to ask and she told me I had to request the paper application. Now I've received the application packet in the mail, and it's sitting in my drawer. Unless you can provide me with a link to the online application for MSc Economics (and I sincerely hope you can!) I will go will take the word of Ms Fauvrelle. No online app for me. :(
