I’d like to know which Big Ten school is the most acclaimed?
In sports? In Greek Life? In general party life? In academics? In professional placement? In grad school placement?
Um all of the above?
That’s a tough call… I’ll have to play it safe and go with my school then: Michigan (but seriously, we are great in all of the above).
Rutgers is the oldest
I second Michigan.
Northwestern and then Michigan, and then Illinois Urbana for STEM and Indiana for Business
Academically imo:
NU
Michigan
Wisconsin
Illinois
Purdue
Minnesota
Maryland
Penn St
Ohio St
Indiana
MSU
Rutgers
Iowa
Nebraska
I think @wayneandgarth is right on the money.
We are in the Chicago suburbs and send LOTS of kids to Big 10 schools. If I look at Naviance for our school, the list above makes sense. So many kids are able to get into Minnesota and down the list. Illinois pretty easy unless the student is shooting for engineering or comp science. Wisconsin OOS is harder to get in than Illinois and Michigan even harder (with an average ACT of 34 for accepted students from our high school.) Northwestern is a lottery and only very tippy top students have a shot…and most who get in do so ED.
And, yes, Indiana for business seems to be a popular choice but they do accept kids not in the tippy top of our school. I know two kids who took only half of their classes on the honors track and had 29s on the ACT and got into Kelley.
I agree with the academic ranking for the most part. Also, Northwestern seems like the least B1G-ish school in the conference (I get much less of a “rah rah” vibe from that school).
Michigan and Northwestern are the top two, and you could make the case for either, especially depending on your major.
I agree with wayneandgarth.
Northwestern and Michigan at the top for sure .
You answered your own question.
Um all of the above?
UM. Go Blue!
NU and Michigan are peers for academics overall. A few rankings placings make little to no difference. NU is a lot smaller. Both have beautiful campuses. Michigan has far superior sports. Ann Arbor, overall, is nicer than Evanston and a lot more affordable. So it’s more a matter of which you like better and which provides a better value for you.
^Well, the fact that Ann Arbor is “a lot more affordable” shows that most people are willing to pay more to live in Evanston. Ann Arbor is nicer if one likes lots of snowball fights due to its much heavier snowfall in the winter.
Ahem… @toooldforschool -

People forget that Northwestern is in the Big 10.
It depends on your major, but i’d rank the top three as:
Northwestern
Michigan
Illinois/Wisconsin
I don’t see Illinois being better than Minnesota, overall. I know their ENG is terrific, but MN isn’t bad, either, and overall they are pretty strong compared to ILL.
S1 will go to MN if other choices don’t work, but won’t consider WIS because of it’s “party school” rep, and he is not the only one with that opinion.
And Johns Hopkins (lacrosse), and I believe Notre Dame this fall (hockey).
I felt in the 90’s that the auto industry would collapse in about a decade because of an over reliance on one slightly overrated Big 10 U. Was not surprised when it happened.
Moral: No school is as good as they say they are. If they really are good, they don’t need that constant self affirmation.
Let’s face it, you have to go with Johns Hopkins here. Compared to all other B1G institutions, JHU has toughest admissions standards, the most research funding, and the highest USNews ranking.
OK, JHU doesn’t have the most Big Ten athletic championships – but still, they have more than Rutgers.
@Corbett: Northwestern has both a lower admit rate and higher average test scores than JHU.
And personally, I prefer to tier/rank by alumni accomplishments than the easily game able USNews ranking:
