Which is the best dorm in UC Merced?

I seriously don't know which dorm I'm going to apply for..(and preferably a single room or a double) my Major is Poli Sci but planning to switch to Cognitive Science. So which dorm is like the nearest to the building of School of Social Science, Humanities and Arts.

Do you think it's better just to get an apartment outside of the school and just drive to the school? I'm kinda leaning towards this because I would like a single room or at least double room and it's much attainable if I get a studio apartment. The thing is knowing the reputation of the town.. no offense... so it's kinda making me not sure where to go.

Thanks!

I don’t remember which of the two (you should be able to find a campus map thouhg) but if you are a freshmen, choose Tuolomne or Mariposa. Those are the closest buildings to the dining commons, gym, and classrooms/library. Theres a newer set of buildings called The Summits, and while they are newer, they are also the farthest away from everything, and the rooms don’t have their own bathrooms, you have to share a bathroom with everyone on that floor.

I am an incoming freshman considering to attend to UC Merced. What do you guys do there for fun or whenever there’s time to spare? I don’t want to study all the time I want to balance my social life and academic life. I look into Tuolomne and Mariposa! Oh and how’s the Psychology/Poli Sci or Cognitive Science program over there? Sorry, I just have a lot of questions.

Thanks! :)

Psychology is pretty healthy here. I’m not sure about cognitive science but my former roommate is majoring in that. I am more of an athlete so I spend considerable time in the gym working out/practicing. If you don’t want to do that you can join a club, fraternity, or attend events that happen on campus like movie nights or whatever. You can also go to parties. Most importantly make friends with a lot of your hallmates so you guys can hang out together.

Hi theydidntnameme

I am transferring student for Fall2011. Do you have any suggestion for me that should i live in Dorm or Rent house outside? because I heard that the price is kind of similar.

the good thing of living outside is that i can have more freedom, and its more convinient because i hv car and its easily for me to get food outside, but it’s kinda alone becoz im new of everything here.

i think living in dorm is better for me to know more friends and study together with them, and more communication. But i never live in dorm b4 and don’t know how it feels.

I still so struggling about that>< Do you have idea please? Thank you:)

I transferred here too. I don’t know if there are exceptions, but from my experience, if you room on campus (your not going in the dorms, you’ll live in the gray suites) all your roommates will be new transfers too. My closest friends were my suite mates because we only knew each other. We also knew our neighbors below us well, they were also transfers. I don’t know if your RA will know if you are transfers though. Try to get along with your suitemates, that way whenever there is an event, you can roll up there together instead of being alone. So I highly suggest living on campus the 1st year.

Hey guys, i am also a fall 2011 transfer student. I am totally confused if i should rent outside or just kinda live on campus. i would hate to live alone, but my biggest concern is food… how is the food on campus? i am very picky in what i eat . I don’t eat beef or pork… so stuck with eating chicken  and seafood ( not that i expect them to provide that) . But Overall, how is the food?
by the way, sorry if this question was asked in different topics…

The food sucks. Personally for me its hit or miss. Most of the beef is miss. Pasta is good. Fish is good. Chicken is good but I got tired of it after eating it for lunch everyday for a whole semester.

The problem for me is those options aren’t there everyday. One day I’ll luck out and there’s pasta and catfish. Next day there may be 3 didn’t kinds of beef (seriously, stay away, the beef doesn’t taste the way it looks).

There’s other options. You can make your own sandwich, so if you like doing that then that may work out for you. There’s also an area for pizza, mexican food (quesadillas, burritos…) And a grill (burgers, corn dogs…).

The only thing that’s always open is the grill. Other parts of the cafeteria are often closed on the weekends or close earlier then the grill does.

There’s also a salad station which helps. As for non prepared food, you but refrigerated sandwiches, get cereal, and various burritos, etc that need to be microwaved.

Oh and there’s fruits chips, and muffins/cookies.

This sounds like alot but that’s only if you like all the options. Alot of options I avoid because I’m trying to eat healthy. For example I haven’t eaten from the pizza place in over a year.

Just remember thatits still a cafeteria and the majority of the workers are students like you and me that maybe can’t cook, but work there because we need the money. So remember that when you think of the quality of the food.

I think you should live on campus. The only real problems that will make your life hell are if you hate your roommates and if you hate the food. If you live off campus you eliminate those two problems but you bring others into play (like having to commute and not meeting any friends). So its a tradeoff. But I suggest you live on campus to start, if only for the experience, and so don’t wonder what you’re missing out on if you only lived off campus.

It depends on how social you are/plan to be.

For people that are not very outgoing and personable, the dorms (Tuolumne, Mariposa, and Tenaya) are the places to be. The suites(terraces), from my experience(I lived in them), are slightly more isolated than the dorms. I, however, made lots of friends very quickly. They are a better place to live, as they are bigger, etc. Some people did not make many friends so quick since it is so easy to isolate yourself inside the suites.

Summary:
If you can handle making friends/are very social, go for the suites.
If you want to be exposed to more people in a shorter amount of time/need the closeness to socialize, go for the dorms.

thanx guys for ur inputs…something to really sit there and decide :)

@razore How are the bathrooms on The Summits? Is it like a common shower room? Or is it by cubicle or something like that? Are the bathroom big enough for the 5 rooms sharing on them?

I kinda want my own bathroom lol… I have OCD in terms of the bathroom situation. Unfortunately, I got the The Summits - The Cathedral cause I got accepted in Academic Excellence. Oh yeah what’s the difference between the other people if you’re Academic Excellence? I just felt like applying without knowing what it is lol.

Definitely get Mariposa or Tuolumne.
Last year (2010-2011 school year) Mariposa was the “happening” dorm. People would actually walk over from Tuolumne and Cathedral and Tenaya to hang out in Mariposa.

DO NOT live off campus unless it’s absolutely necessary. It’s not really great unless you’re a sophomore/junior/senior and have an established circle of friends.

Mariposa or Tuolumne. were by far the best dorm in Merced, they were large, shower stall got doors, and it is closest to classrooms. Mariposa got beach view too

lies lies lies

you do NOT have to share a bathroom with everyone on your floor in the Summits. Move to the summits the rooms are huge, you share a bathroom with 5 other rooms, you have daily cleaning ladies, and you have your own laundry room, and you have daily cleaning ladies

I lived in cathedral last year

I am an incoming freshman too, well i am 98% sure i am going here lol. Well i visited the campus and i was suprised at how much i actually liked it! The problem is I am from a big city (San Diego) and i was wondering how it was to adjust from a big city to a small town?

If you do not like cleaning bathrooms than u want the summits because they have workers who clean the bathrooms daily.

Mariposa and Tuolomone you have to clean your own bathrooms.
