i was recently admitted into Revelle for Elec. Eng., but some of my friends who also got in were placed in Warren/muir for biomed/chemical/etc...

after reading some other threads, i got some mixed responses, some said revelle is the hardest college, esp for engineering. is this true?

which college is most suited for engineering majors at SD and how hard is it to switch?

thankyou!

Revelle is generally considered the “hardest” because it has the most GEs and you have to cover a breadth of different topics (to align with it’s philosophy of the “Renaissance scholar”). This can be challenging for engineering majors, since your major requirements are already substantial, but it’s certainly do-able. Some of the requirements, such as Calculus, you will likely fulfill as major requirements. Others you may get out of due to AP or transfer credit.

Warren has a reputation for having more engineering majors, but all majors are represented in every college. More engineering students probably go to Warren because of its reputation as being the “engineering college” (regardless of engineering students being represented in all colleges) and because it offers a lighter set of GE requirements to engineering majors. Muir is another college that is considered to have an “easier” set of GE requirements, mainly because there aren’t that many and they are pretty flexible.

Take a look at the different GE requirements, as those are the only academic difference between the colleges. Don’t just go off of what people tell you. Do the research and form your own opinions. In my opinion, the college you’re in doesn’t matter nearly as much as everyone (especially incoming freshman) seem to think it is. Generally, they only let you switch colleges if you demonstrate that staying in your college will cause you to delay graduation, but if you find that you can graduate on time in Revelle with your major, then it might be much harder for you to change colleges.

Engineering major can be in any college. It doesn’t matter where you’ve been placed in.
I think everybody says Revelle is the hardest because of how many classes you have to take for GE and if you are engineering, it will likely to delay your graduation a bit.

A lot of engineering students are in Warren because its GE contains math and science classes so once you take your lower division for your major, you automatically knocks out some GE’s. That’s why.

So far, I never know anybody who’s able to switch out of college yet, so I can’t say that it’s possible or impossible. Most of the people who’ve recently been accepted complain about not getting into their first choice. I was lucky enough to get into my 2nd but my friend who was accepted last year got into her 4th. Basically freshmen freak out in the beginning but for some reason they eventually accept the college they are in and they seem to be okay with it towards the end of their first year.
