I was wondering which school would be the best fit for me. As of now I want to major in English, but I am also seriously considering Biology or maybe even Economics. Which school has the most comfortable dorm rooms, the best food, and the nicest campus overall. Also, I was curious which schools are known for their friendly students and which are known as snobby? I want to know which school would be my best fit, all costs and admissions aside.

AMHERST COLLEGE: The main things I don't like about Amherst is that people will always think I go to UMass Amherst (I live in MA) and that you take classes at other schools. The main reason I like LACs is that they are small, inimate, and very personal.

WILLIAMS COLLEGE: I feel like Williams is the most prestigious namewise. The only thing that bugs me is that I heard the dorms aren't that great and that there is nothing to do there as far as your social-life goes. Also, some people have told me that Williams is all jocks.

BOWDOIN COLLEGE: I have heard that the food and dorms are incredible. Are the academics here are as good as the other schools I mentioned?

MIDDLEBURY COLLEGE: This school has the nicest dorms and campus, or so I've heard. Is the location just a little too rural?

You should go to the library and check out Peterson’s Guide and Princeton Review Best 376. These books give great overview.

All 4 schools you mentioned are academically respected.

Don’t get caught up in the prestige. Best fit = best school for your personality, learning style, activities.

You might want to rethink having food & dorm being such big criteria; makes me wonder what you think college is for.

For a great LAC for English and writing you might want to consider Kenyon College.

I looked at your past posts to see if you had put up any stats. You have gone off nursing and NEU, huh? Anyway, it doesn’t make much sense to focus on just these four colleges when they are all SUPER competitive and only accept a small fraction of applicants. And it’s impossible to speculate on “fit” without knowing what kind of student/learner/person you are, as longhaul says.

If you are worried about snobbiness you should expand your search beyond New England. You would very likely find a warmer, friendlier vibe at some of the midwest, southern or western LACs.

If snobby=preppy in your book, then you are looking at 4 very preppy schools. That doesn’t mean they aren’t friendly - ‘friendly’ is all about your personal fit with the predominant culture of the student body.

If we have more info about your grades, test scores and income level, we can point you to schools that are less preppy if that’s what you mean.

If you discount Amherst because some in your circle will confuse it for UM, then you may be trying to impress the wrong folks. Btw, all 4 are highly competitive.
