Which LAC to pick for a crunchy geek?

So... The crunchiness is negotiable to a certain extent, but the geekiness is not. I don't mind a mix of people, but I definitely don't want to end up where the frats/jocks dominate an already small school. I'd like intense academics and a decent Spanish dept.

Besides Middlebury, what else looks good? Thanks.

I don't know if you could define it as "crunchy", but Rice definitely is ruled by cool geeks. They have a residential college system and NO Greek scene. It's a very inclusive social life, and yes, there is a social life.

Hi Garnet.

Here are a few places (in no particular order) that you might want to consider depending on your grades and interests: Sarah Lawrence, Smith, Hampshire, Drew, Bard, Bennington, Earlham, Wesleyan, Skidmore, Wheaton, Grinnell, Bates. This is just a start. I'm sure that there are a lot more quality LAC's that fit your description. Good luck with your search!

Reed - very crunchy, intense academics.
Oberlin - close to the same.

I second Reed and Oberlin.

Someone "crunchy" could also find like-minds at Swarthmore, Macalester and Carleton, I think.

Maybe I don't know what "crunchy" and "geek" mean, but that is certainly not my impression of Middlebury. Middlebury is really white, very jock oriented, and notably preppie.

What about Vassar?

Wesleyan, perhaps.

Yes to Vassar and Brandeis as well.

connecticut college
vassar
bates
wesleyan
hampshire
oberlin

all have a big 'crunchy' population

if you're female, definitely mt holyoke

How limited are you to an LAC? Chicago (4400 ugrad) attracts a lot of students who were looking primarily at LAC's because of the intense academics and the undeniable geekiness. Crunchy is highly variable-- some students do the pink hair and the dreadlocks, others are very straight-laced.

Maybe check out Bard College... Geeky, yes. Not as crunchy as Hampshire--more hipster-ish--but in the same vein.

Vassar and Wesleyan were founded for you.

Transylvania Tech in Romania.

What is the definition of "crunchy"?

The stereotypical Macalester student exemplifies crunchy.

I think crunchy originally referred to granola-crunching hippies. I'm not a hippie, but it also refers to free-thinking offbeat liberals.

Thanks for all the suggestions - if you have any more, keep 'em coming. :)

So this is what I'm thinking (correct me if I'm wrong):

I had read elsewhere that Middlebury was preppy but there was a mix of other groups. Sigh...

What about Pomona?

Rice - I couldn't stand the humidity.

Sarah Lawrence, Hampshire, Bard, Earlham, Wesleyan, Macalester, Carleton, Vassar, Brandeis, Mt Holyoke, Chicago - don't like Span. dept.

Smith, Bennington, Skidmore - possibilities

Drew, Swarthmore - Good Span. depts. What is the location like?

Grinnell, Reed, Bates, Oberlin, Connecticut - top choices so far. Could you please rank these in academics (along with Drew & Swarthmore) and tell me the pros and cons of each? Sorry, tall order, I know. :)

Vassar ( ten charc)
