Which Liberal Arts Colleges have amazing theater programs?

I am looking at colleges so far as a second semester junior and I was wondering which liberal arts colleges have amazing theater programs?

Whitman College is very good.

Muehlenberg and Emerson are both very strong.

Kenyon, Elon, and I second Muhlenberg.

I third Muhlenberg. Not a LAC, but I have heard good things about American U – Never thought of it as a theater school, but it is supposedly quite good

Mulhenberg-i have a couple friends who go there; they say its good!

Kenyon, vassar, bard, Sarah Lawrence

Wake Forest University

My S researched this a lot! He originally was going to apply to audition based schools but changed his mind in the end to a BA in theater as he is a good student and didn’t want to give up the full range of academics. The schools that he had on his list were: Kenyon, Vassar, Conn College, Muhlenberg. Whitman, Bard, Brandeis, and Skidmore. He fell head over heels in love with Kenyon and felt no one could compare. The faculty is amazing, the wide range of self-directed productions, and the 25 productions a year blew him away. Also, the shows are all very well attended and almost always sell out. He is also interested in English and writing, and Kenyon was a perfect fit for him. He appled ED to K and will matriculate in the fall.

Vassar, Muhlenberg, Skidmore, Brandeis, Oberlin, Conn College. These are the LAC’s my theatre son applied to. Of these, probably Muhlenberg, Vassar and Skidmore would be considered the strongest.

If my S had not gotten in K ED he would have appied ED2 to Vassar…a lot of great theater stuff going on there. My S has a good friend at Oberlin and he isn’t exactly thrilled with their theater program… but maybe it is just him?

momof3sons… where did your S end up? Or is he still waiting?

Northwestern University is not a LAC, but it has one of the nation’s top Theatre programs integrated with a very strong academic environment. They mount over 60 productions on campus every year and have an amazing tradition of Theatre alumni professional success stories. It is very worth checking out.

I will echo Elon and also add Davidson College, plus Peace College as an up-and-coming program.

if you’re a girl Barnard is supposed to have an amazing program plus all the opportunities in NYC

Yes… have 2 friends with girls at Barnard in theater and both are having amazing experiences there!

Tyler, you’ve posted this question in multiple threads and have received well over a hundred recommendations. If you continue to ask on CC, you’ll eventually compile a list of almost every BA theatre program in the US. Your original list (below) is excellent and could take months to visit, research and apply to.

Williams
Vassar
Wesleyan
Northwestern
Kenyon
Skidmore
Muhlenberg
Middlebury
Brown

What else are you looking for? Can you be more specific? Have you searched all the threads on CC specific to the theatre programs at the schools on your original list?

Do take a look at Whitman, it’s theater program is excellent, and you you can’t beat the Pacific Northwest.

Also consider schools in California – lots of audition opportunities. I can think of more universities than LACs that fit the bill…Chapman, USC, Loyola…

What about U Conn BFA Acting?

or

Pace University ?
