Which major is most beneficial if I want to be a psychiatrist?

I’m currently a high school senior trying to figure out what major to go into for college. Ultimately, I want to be a psychiatrist in my professional career. Of course I would enroll as pre-med and take those courses, but I am unsure what to major in. I have thought about psychology because that seems to be obvious but I have also looked into biochemistry. What majors seem to be the best?

There are required courses for premed. As long as you take those courses, and do well in them, along with all of your courses, you can major in anything. Grades and MCAT scores are the main things that determine acceptance into medical school.

Psychiatrists are MDs. So you can take any major you like as long as you also fulfill the pre-med requirements.

Be more interested in becoming a physician first and foremost. A lot of people go into med school thinking that they want to this or that speciality, but when they actually experience the specialty firsthand it is often a completely different experience. Unless you have family that are in the specialty, significant experience as a patient, or have extensive experience working in that field (e.g., medical scribe),you probably don’t know what it is really like. Also, there is a good chance you will change your mind. Before med school I thought I would do pediatrics or family medicine but I went into pathology (which is NOTHING like you see on TV).
