Which major should i choose

Rice is THE DREAM SCHOOL and I want to either apply to comp sci major or stats major, which are both in the school of engineering. Which major is relatively easier to get into in Rice?

I like both areas.

Don’t quote me on this, but I think that Rice admits you to the university rather than a particular major or school of study.

Oh, so it doesnt really matter since they are in the same school.

Rice does not have an open door policy. It admits by major/college.

They are in the same school, and computer science and stats most likely have the same core classes. You could probably transfer from one major to another if you change your mind in the first semester. You only have to decide carefully on your major if you go into engineering or architecture because they have specific schedules and may even require portfolios so I wouldn’t worry about which major, just pick the one that interests you the most. They are probably equally difficult to get in.

Yeah I don’t think there’s a big difference in admissions for those two, and there isn’t a huge difference between any two majors honestly. Stat and CS are not very easy to transfer between here, so if you are unsure then you should take the first and second semester CS classes your first and second semesters, or else you’ll have to wait a year and scramble a little to graduate. Plenty of people transfer to CS after freshman year, it just makes it harder because you have to take more CS classes at once. You don’t need a portfolio for either CS or STAT. My best advice is try out the intro classes for both and see which seems more interesting. There’s some programming in STAT and some statistics in CS, especially if you take machine learning classes. Let me know if you have any other questions!

What if I get into Rice (lol this prob isnt gonna happen) and I want to do double major on STAT and CS? Is that a difficult process? @jfking01

It might be hard (but manageable) to fit in enough credit hours to do a double major. I advise you check out Rice’s website and the pages for each major to see how many credit hours each requires.

CS/STAT is a reasonable double major, but it will definitely be hard. You will not be able to take some classes when your peers are taking them etc. That being said, STAT 310 is a CS requirement, and if you find yourself interested in machine learning or statistical data analysis then you’ll definitely have a lot of overlap. I personally would not go for a BS in CS in that case (there’s not much difference between the BS and BA anyway).
