Which major??

I will be in college this August, but I do not even know which direction to head :S
I am interest in studying drugs, maybe find a cure to cancer (who knows). But recently I've been hearing about job declines in the pharmaceutical industry.

My university offers a 3-2 program, 3 years at PLU and 2 possibly at Columbia U. or UWash StLouis. I am thinking about Columbia, maybe study biomedical engineering or chemical engineering? But I am also concerned about my GPA dropping if I choose to attend Columbia during the 2 yr, and I'm interested in studying for Master's.

What should I do? Stay at PLU and study biochem then master in phar., or go to Columbia to studying biochem engineering or chem en? My current strong and favorite subjects are biology (top in school) and chemistry. I am also the top physics student in my school but I do not really enjoy learning it much.

So much to think about in this few months.. AHHH!!
(maybe just change and become a vet? my mom will definitely kill me)

You don’t need to choose right away. Take your first year of courses as if you are going for an Engineering degree and then make a decision after you have had time to let the ideas mature. Biomedical Engineering probably requires a Ph.D. for most jobs in the field. Chemical Engineering is a bit down right now from the pharmaceutical perspective, and Biology is even more depressed as far as jobs go.

For Pharmacy, you need a Pharm.D. most likely rather than a Masters. Finally, Vet school is OK but even harder to get into than Medical School (there are fewer of them).

Anyway, you have time, don’t fret so much, enjoy your first year in college and then make some decisions.
