Hey guys, I've been looking into what I want to study in college, and as I've been accepted into Rutgers's School Of Engineering, they have been my main focus of research. Their chemical engineering department (What I think is my main interest) has an option for a 5 year BS/MS(or ME) program, with an option in Chemical Engineering or Pharm. Engineering. What's the outlook on Pharmaceutical Engineers? Is it better to specialize like that, or to just go into general Chemical Engineering?

My wife spent a decade in manufacturing of brand name Big Pharma. I will be honest and say that given the current situation where nearly 80% of prescriptions filled are generics, Big Pharma jobs have left the building. As patents expire the gravy train of billion dollar blockbusters is not likely to be sustained.

Hi cagg333,

Check out the International society of pharmaceutical engineer (ISPE) for updates in that area. Based on my personal experiences as a former pharmaceutical engineer and that of my colleagues, I don’t expect the field to grow. Go as a chemical engineer- don’t specialized too much that you’re limited in the area you can work in.
