Hey guys, I’ll be a senior in HS this year and choosing my major pretty soon. I was wondering if you guys could help me narrow it down. I love math and physics. Calculus is just fun to do in spare time and physics is just fascinating for me, so I thought engineering would be a good mix for those subjects. Initially, I was thinking aerospace/aeronautical because of the physics aspects being more prominent in that field, but many of the undergrad schools I will be applying to, such as Stanford, don’t offer aerospace as a major. Are there any other engineering fields that I would love considering my love for calc and physics? If you have experience in an engineering field, it would be much appreciated if you shared what you did in your job too!
I’ve taken a computer programming class, and am not bad at it, but I really don’t like it that much so I’m going to eliminate computer science, which brings me to my question about electrical engineering, what exactly do they work with and what kind of jobs can they get?
Thanks!
I also don’t want to end up in a shop working on cars, basically a mechanic. So is that a sign majoring in mechanical engineering wouldn’t be fun for me either? p.s. not entirely sure what mechanical engineers do because I know you don’t need a Mechanical eng. degree to be a mechanic.
Mechanical engineering and aerospace engineering are practically the same field of study. They cover all the same topics with different examples.
Most engineering schools offer a variety of engineering majors. Usually the freshman classes are same or almost all the same.
My advise is to apply to a variety of school, including some “safety” choices. (As you probably already, Stanford and other top schools accept fewer than 10% applicants. Some of those rejected had perfect stats.)
Yes I will definitely be applying to safeties that I would still be happy at, for example santa clara has an awesome program. I think I can still get into at least one of those top schools though, because I may not have perfect stats, but I’m able to tell a good story and am going to put oodles of effort into the essays which I expect to be unique and eye catching even without a sad story to tell or difficulties/etc. They wont be just like the thousands of other essays they get every year. Granted, I still know it is unlikely, but it can’t hurt to try my hardest.
