Hi! I'm a junior and I want to be a musical theatre major. However, I also really want to major in psych or social work. I toured Syracuse, which I really enjoyed, but they said that musical theatre majors can't double major due to the rigidity of the MT major. My friend also mentioned a couple of other schools that won't and she said that NYU Tisch is the only school that lets MT majors double-major. So, I was wondering. Definitively, which of the following schools will allow MT majors to double-major?

Carnegie Mellon University
Emerson College
Ithaca College
Long Island University
Marymount Manhattan College
Montclair State University
New York University - Steinhardt
New York University - Tisch
Pace University
SUNY schools
University of Hartford
Wagner College

Which ones would allow me to have a MT major and double-major with something else, and which ones would I only be allowed to MT major and nothing else? Also, which ones would let me minor in psych/social work? Thanks!

CMU’s website says you can, however with a double major you really couldn’t do it in 4 years. Minoring can be done as long as it doesn’t interfere…you have a harder time in MT because there are not a lot of electives to use. Also the drama department classes have to take the priority

Can a School of Drama student complete a double major or minor?
In short, yes. However, completing a double major would likely take longer than four years. If a student wishes to pursue a double major, the School of Drama major would need to be his/her primary major, and Drama courses would need to be taken in sequence with no substitutions or exceptions.

Completing a minor is possible within four years, provided the minor requirements don’t conflict with Drama classes. In the last two years, students have graduated with minors in Creative Writing, English, Political Science, Business Management, Gender Studies and French and Francophone Studies. For Music Theatre students, it’s more of a challenge to complete a minor as you don’t have as many opportunities to fit electives into your schedule. It’s possible, but it’d greatly depend on the minor requirements.

The following Double Majors are the only possible combinations of Hartt programs.
Composition and Music Production and Technology
Instrumental Performance and Composition
Instrumental Performance and Music Education (Not open to pianists, organists, guitarists or jazz instrumentalists)
Instrumental Performance and Music History-Performance Practice Emphasis
Instrumental Performance and Music Management
Jazz Studies and Composition
Music Education: Vocal and Instrumental emphases (Not open to pianists, organists, guitarists or jazz instrumentalists)
Vocal Performance and Music Education
Vocal Performance and Music History-Performance Practice Emphasis
Vocal Performance and Music Management

While you may find schools that allow you to double major, it may be close to impossible to do so in 8 semesters. You may need to add an extra semester or two, or go summers. Even if it appears that you can fit in the necessary number of classes in 8 semesters, it is probable that you may not have the flexibility in your musical theatre schedule to fit in the classes that are required each semster as well as the required classes for your second major.

To expand on Monkey13’s post above, Ithaca’s MT major essentially IS a double major, in Acting and Vocal Performance, with a minor in Dance. This might help you understand why most schools do not allow MTs to add in another major, at least in the four-year time period. I imagine that by taking summer classes and coming into college with college credits and APs, it would be possible in some places, but you’d have to be giving up some professional summer opportunities that could advance a future career.

There’s always graduate school – either for performing arts or the other concentration.

D was able to do a major in VP at NYU (Steinhardt-MT) along with 2 minors in 4 years. She had about 12 credits accepted for AP classes. It was easier to do two minors, since they allowed for a lot more flexibility when scheduling classes. There is very little flexibility within the MT required classes since many are only given in a particular sequence and only have one or two sections.

With two minors she was able to schedule MT requirements and then work around it. She also did one or two semesters with more than 18 credits. It would be much harder to try to schedule around the required classes for 2 majors.

My son is double-majoring at Rider. He’ll end up with a BFA in MT (He is switching from the Bachelor of Music degree to the new BFA program) and a BA in Arts Administration. But this partially was made possible because he came in with over 30 credits from APs and because some of the AA and MT classes count for both majors. I think there are a few other double-majors at Rider – not sure which degrees. Check with the admissions office for info.

There are also students at Rider who are doing MT and are minoring in various subjects. Again–check with the school. You will be in the best position for double-majoring anywhere with a headstart from AP/IB credits.

Another school not on your list is Muhlenberg. They have a wonderful theatre/dance/MT department. It is a BA with audition for scholarship only (although if Charlie Richter likes you he puts in a good word for you with admissions!). They are very flexible with the majors and encourage multiple paths. Plus is it a beautiful campus!
