University of Michigan
University of Virginia
University of North Carolina
University of California-Berkeley
University of California-Los Angeles

I think it would be either UVa or UCLA. Agree?

That’s like asking which is better, Harvard, Yale, or MIT? Um…can I say all of the above lol? I personally “like” UCLA better than UCB…and I think Michigan might be more academically-elite than UVA and UNC, but I think UNC might be more socially-elite.

Name recognition:

Berkeley
UVA/Michigan
UCLA
UNC

In that order.

UCLA definitely has more name recognition outside of of Cali because of its elite sports tradition.

Name recognition according to whom? As osucowboys points out, all 5 of those universities are very highly regarded. They don’t come any better if you ask me. But name recognition will varry by region and segment of population.

Internationally:
Berkeley
Michigan
UCLA
UVa
UNC

In Academe (according to the US News Peer Assessment score):
Berkeley (4.7/5.0)
Michigan (4.4/5.0)
UVa (4.3/5.0)
UCLA (4.2/5.0)
UNC (4.1/5.0)

Overall, I would agree with Hope2getrice. As undergraduate institutions go:
Berkeley
Michigan and UVa
UCLA
UNC

UCLA.
But most people think they’re wearing a DKNY equivalence.

Top public university that has the most name recognition for being a university would be Berkeley. Not UC Berkeley. Not Cal.

Oh, let me clarify. I’m just talking about pure name recognition; not being limited to recognition in academics. In that case, I believe that sports, student body volunteer outreach, renowned professors, research breakthroughs, etc all influence each schools reputation.

Think of it this way: which school would most of your neighbor have heard of?

In that case, I would definitely say UCLA has the most name recognition. I live on the east coast and most people here know the UCLA name while UCB’s name is relatively unknown. On the east coast, UVa is a very well respected university probably more so than any of the other universities listed.

All in all, each of the listed schools are very well known in sports. UNC for basketball, UCLA for lots of sports (I believe its 104 NCAA titles now), Michigan for football, and UVA for basketball and football.

Chances are, your neighbor hasn’t even graduated from college and is not an authority on universities. In such cases, universities’ reputations become very regional. For example, in Texas, UT-Austin and Texas A&M would probably be more famous than Berkeley, Michigan, UCLA, UNC or UVa. In the South, UNC and UVa would probably win. In the Northeast, Michigan and UVa probably have the edge. In the Midwest, Michigan has wins. In the West Coast, Berkeley and UCLA are champion. It really depends on one’s locale. Overall, I still think Berkeley would be the most recognized by the “common” man, followed by Michigan, UCLA and UNC. UVa would probably be the least recognized, but that’s just because it does not have a major athletic tradition.

UNC without a doubt-No other college sells more merchandise (shirts, stickers, hats, etc) than UNC.

UCLA
UC-Berkeley
UVA
Michigan
UNC

One question-are we going by prestige, or just general name recognition by your “average Joe”?

Joe the plumber ?

Haha no, Joe six pack. Or Joe Biden. Joe Schmoe works too.

Those are all different names for the same school…am I missing something here?

^ I think some people don’t realize that Berkeley is part of the UC system, or is even also called Cal.

As for the question, I think to the average man, UCLA has the most name recognition. I’m from the east coast, and most people around here have heard of UCLA because of their sports tradition. I remember growing up, UCLA’s name was thrown around quite a l lot, and as a result, it was one of the only colleges I knew (other than Harvard and Yale and Princeton) - not Berkeley, or Michigan or UVA.

If we are going by name recognition based on sports tradition, then UNC would obviously win as they sell more sports merchandise than any of the other schools listed, and won the NCAA basketball national title this year which would obviously lead to increased name recognition.

ucla or uc berkeley

UCLA also has a great sports tradition. Its true that UNC won the title this year for basketball but UCLA has won many NCAA basketball titles as well in the past. For UCLA its not only basketball but a whole slew of sports. UCLA just won the NCAA water polo national title yesterday, bringing the count up to 104 which is unmatched by any other university.

UVA has a stellar basketball and football tradition? That’s certainly news to me.
