Which ten public universities do you believe have the highest level of respect and recognition throughout the country? --order them 1-10, 1 being the best (public universities only)

If you are looking to overall prestige, you should look into the USNWR peer assessment ranking.

It’s close to the top public ranking, except it’s not as packed with UC schools (Berkeley and UCLA are still up there).

I don’t have the ranking on hand, but it’s roughly
Berkeley
Michigan/UVa
Texas/UNC/UWisc/UIUC/GeorgiaTech

You forgot UCLA.

^ U Chicago?

Chicago isn’t public.

^^^Private school…

^^^ Pardon my ignorance please. I didn’t know that. Sorry.

UC-Berkeley 4.7

Michigan 4.4

Virginia 4.3

UCLA 4.2

North Carolina 4.1

Wisconsin 4.1

Georgia Tech 4.0

Illinois 4.0

Texas 3.9

College of William and Mary 3.8

Penn St. 3.8

UC-Davis 3.8

UC-San Diego 3.8

Washington 3.8

^ I’ve always thought William and Mary should be higher, even among academics. Great school for undergrad.

I’ve always thought of Berkeley, UVA, and Michigan as the top tier, with the rest significantly lower in prestige.

Two schools I haven’t seen mentioned yet are the University of Minnesota and the University of Washington, both schools with great reputations, especially in certain fields. I live about midway between UWisconsin and UMinnesota, and Minnesota is really gaining on Wisconsin on getting some of the top students (and I’m from Wisconsin).

The public schools with the highest amount of prestige and respect are the great research institutions at schools like Berkeley, Michigan, UCLA, and Wisconsin. We tend to forget on CC that the world’s greatest universities combine both teaching AND research.

The best way to rank is by SAT math 25th percentile.

1 660 Illinois
2 650 Georgia Tech
3 640 Michigan
4 630 Virginia
5 620 Maryland
5 620 William and Mary
5 620 Wisconsin
5 620 Berkeley
9 610 SUNY Binghamton
10 600 Minnesota
10 600 UCSD

Engineers are so good at math!

uhh, no offence, but that seems like a horrible way to rank…
putting berkeley at 8th place, and eliminating the likes of UNC-CH and UCLA for Binghamton and UCSD…
besides, that gives an obvious unfair advantage to Georgia Tech

Actually, I think it is one of the only objective, fair ways to rank. (Math SAT)

Berkeley is tied for 5th.

Just curious, college help - why do you think so?

That only ranks incoming freshmen’s aptitude at math, it says nothing for the quality of the education there.

Yes, ignoring the quality and number of programs the school has, the facilities, services, etc is the way to go. Dumb.

For Undergrad:
- William & Mary
(significant gap) - Michigan
- UNC

For Grad:
- Berkeley
- Michigan
(significant gap) - UVA

the strength of the grad program usually correlates to the prestige unfortunately

UVa grad barely rates mention with the rest. Most programs are ranked outside the Top 20 except Law and Business. See the posts under US News Grad rankings.
