Is there a particular on-campus dorm in which male students in Moody College of Communications/RTF major typically live? The Whitis area dorms are closest, of course, but Kinsolving and Littlefield are out since they are female only. And my son didn’t apply to honors, so the honors quad is out as well.
Duren may be nice, but it comes at a premium. Duren and San Jac are the most expensive on campus dorms. I have never had a kid in Whitis Court. Mine has spent 4 years in the Jesters - two as a resident and two as an RA. I recall a parent on Texas Parents closed FB page that was asking around to find a roommate for her son who loved Whitis, but his freshman year roommate was moving to an apartment. This was 2015- 16 school year. That parent said her student loved the community of Whitis Court. It was like a family. They have some of the most unique floor plans on campus and larger than normal closets. The Whitis Court complex used to be a private CO-op that the University bought at some point. Whitis is currently the home for the LLC for International students, I believe. However an LLC does not mean the whole dorm. I know the LLCs in Kinsolving only take 40 students.
I encourage ALL parents of UT students to join Texas Parents. There is a fee and it is completely worth it. You will be added to the closed FB page where you can get advice from other Texas Parents on absolutely any topic. You can search past posts and find so much info. Simple things like “where can my LH get his car serviced, hair cut, nails done” to “my LH is failing Calculus and needs help or my LH has been there a semester and has no friends”. Seriously recommend!
Thank you, @lots2do ! I attended UT in the mid-late 80’s and lived at Kinsolving for two years, so am familiar with the area. Back then Whitis Court was the Co-ops. My son is kind of quiet and low key, so I think would like a smaller, family-atmosphere dorm. I will check out Texas Parents!
@TexasExMom Definitely follow the advice of @lots2do and join Texas Parents FB group early. There are already parents from the class of 22 in the Facebook group asking these questions. The community there is so helpful. My son is class of 21 and I try to keep up with the group for information.
My son is an RTF major and lives in the honors quad. I think your son can live in the honors quad if he puts it as one of his choices and there are empty spots. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
Duren and the honors quad are the closest but Whitis Court is also very close.
Thank you, @jedwards70. That is interesting about honors quad being an option if there are spaces available! I signed up for Texas Parents yesterday and have requested to join the FB page.
I tried to join Texas Parents FB group, but they didn’t accept my request. I also signed up at the Texas Parents website, but then I later saw that parents of incoming freshman can start signing up on March 7, so I guess I’ll have to wait until then.
Unless your student has a lot of AP credit, they will be taking basics the first year. This means they will likely be all over campus. Even with a year’s worth of AP credits, my son had only two classes in McCombs freshman year.
He had Calculus in the Engineering part of campus, had an Arts and Entertainment Tech class and a UGS Bollywood class in the Liberal Arts building and had a fair number of classes in the University Teaching Center. He lived in a private dorm off campus (Callaway) but if he had been on campus, Jester would have been most convenient. It also would have put him pretty close to PCL (the library) which he used a few times a week and Gregory (which he used infrequently). Nothing on the campus is so far that a healthy 18 year old cannot handle the walk and it does help with the freshman 15. Have him learn about SureWalk and the dangers of walking alone at night but if he is like mine, he will not listen.
I second (or third) the suggestion on Texas Parents although they have gotten very strict on what posts they allow anymore making it much less useful than it used to be.
