I am leaning toward one of the smaller dorms, but I really don't know yet. Basically, I want info about Whitis, Littlefield, Breckenridge, Prateher, and Moore-hill. Any and all opinions and insight are appreciated. Tell me the bests and the worsts and be very detailed and don't be afraid to ramble.

The rooms in Littlefield are tiny. Unbelievably small compared to the rooms in Kinsolving or Jester or San Jac or the Honors Quad - those are the other dorms I have seen. In Littlefield, beds must be bunked - no room for two beds on the floor - and even then there is not enough space for three people to be in the room at once. The closets in Littlefield are big, so there is enough room for your stuff. It is a very, very, quiet dorm. I do not recommend listing it as one of your top three choices, but if it were a choice of living on campus in Littlefield and living off campus, I would still live in Littlefield.

whitis's rooms are pretty lengthy and really roomy. i don't live there but my friend does and I like it a lot. But to be in Whitis you need to be a residential FIG.

Moore-Hill's rooms are nice too. They're pretty standard but very cozy and roomy all the same. I recommend this dorm.

In my opinion, a smaller dorm is always better than a bigger dorm. Brackenridge, Roberts, and Prather are grouped together and they have a lot of get togethers for their residents. There is the BRP courtyard for those three dorms and they share a pool table room, a TV, room, and some other stuff. They all have community baths and very few rooms share a bathroom (like 4 or 5) compared to Jester. Whitis has a really nice courtyard as well. I haven't been in a whitis room, but no complaints yet. Moore-Hill isn't that small of a dorm... it feels about the same size as Duren (even though it is smaller). If you don't mind the community bath experience, I would live in BRP. You can get to Jester City Limits or J2 (food) faster than Jester kids can there themselves (they have to take a 5 minute elevator ride). If you are tired of Jester, Cypress Bend in San Jacinto is an even closer 2 minute walk. It's the best deal for community bath on campus. The dorms are old, however, so don't expect any luxuries (not that you would find any in any other dorm). But everything is solidly built - they feel like traditional college dorms for the traditional college experience.

However, freshmen don't generally live in BRP... just so you know. Mostly sophmores, juniors, and seniors. Fish are generally thrown into Jester if they can.

How is security at Brackenridge/Prathers/Roberts?

I live in simkins now and its fairly easy to just swipe and get in, which I like.
But I hear that in Jester you have to get past many check points.
SO I am oping BRP is the same as simkins.

Prather. Largest rooms, close-knit community, nice beds. Really. It’s awesome here.

Security at night is a joke, you can just open the side doors to let people in. If you take too long, an alarm will sound, but since your room is like 3 feet away from the nearest stairwell/exit, you can be in your room before anybody sees. They don’t check the doors either when the alarms go off anyway.

MidwestMom2Kids_, why would you not live off campus? Did you mean specifically in an off-campus dorm such as Dobie, or just off campus in general? Does that apply for non-freshmen as well, because most eventually do head off campus?

I live in Littlefield, and I personally really like it. The location is awesome. I also personally like a quiet dorm, which Littlefield definitely is. But the people are friendly enough; they’ll smile and make small talk and stuff. I’ve found that the rooms are definitely small, but doable, especially if you rearrange stuff. You pretty much have to bunk beds. I’ve also had no problem with having around 4+ people in the room at once. The large closet is AMAZING! I don’t know how I’ll last next year without such a large closet. It’s nice being able to change clothes in your room, and not have to go to the bathroom, or worry about your roommate seeing you. The community bath aspect isn’t bad at all; just have a shower caddy and possibly a robe. And omg, I love the in-room sink. It’s soooo useful, and I didn’t think it would be when I was looking at dorms.

I would say that the largest drawback is that the dorm is quiet, so get involved in a student group if you can. A few organizations make it a requirement to live in Littlefield (Women in Engineering in Littlefield, and Women in Natural Science, which I’m in). But I’ve made great friends here, and I wouldn’t really want to live anywhere else on-campus.

It might be that the rooms in Littlefield vary in their sizes and that the one I was in was one of the smaller ones.

Paradox, I meant for a freshman trying to decide where to live for his or her first year at UT. (I wrote that over a year ago.) I would still say any dorm on campus before any room off campus, but I have seen Castilian and the other private dorms are reasonable options for freshmen. I know there are quite a few second year UT students in the honors dorms.

For a transfer who doesn’t know many people at UT, dorms are okay - especially for a sophomore rather than a junior. The coops are another possibility.

Midwest - Yeah, that’s probably it. The corner rooms seem much larger!
