“tenishs,
Internationally, who has heard of UMichigan?
Like lilbluewhale said, most schools are not that well known outside of academia. Not even all of the Ivy League schools are well-known.”

Since most international students come to America for graduate studies, UMichigan’s programs are very prestigious (and even rivals Ivies). For example, you can look at the U.S. News Graduate School Rankings. Michigan is ranked in the top-15 in almost every category. Browse the social sciences, law, engineering, business, heck even other programs such as education, social work, library science, public health and nursing. You will find that Michigan is ranked in the top ten in most of those categories.

I can also refer to my own graduate program. The student population at my school is over 20% international (55% out-of-state students overall). They matriculated to Michigan because of its academic prestige and great international reputation.

Hmm it does seem like tenisghs and rjkofnovi are always bashing on WashU. Not only in this thread but others as well. Maybe they were rejected from WashU once? Just a guess.

^^^Poor guess. It’s not bashing WUSTL so much as it is defending U-M from zealots on CC who constantly think it is overrated or “not in the same league” as their school of choice.

Oh, sorry rjkofnovi. I didn’t mean to offend. Yea UM is a good school. I guess CCers tend to look heavily on the Ivy Leagues. So that may explain their bashing on UMichigan. I think even Cornell, Brown, and Dartmouth get bashing too.

muchoschocolate, high school students are naturally naive and will believe anything on CC. Michigan is undeservedly underrated on this forum because it is public and large. However, like Berkeley, it is very prestigious academically and carries a national reputation. By the way, I graduated from Northwestern and enjoyed my experience there.

WUSTL is a good school too. Both schools are good. The OP needs to go for fit. I happen to think it’s a better school for the OP’s areas of interests and also better for a student who is an international applicant.

yea you are right. I’m in high school and I know to take stuff I read on CC with a grain of salt. I don’t understand why sometimes people, in order to defend their school, must bash on other schools as well. It’s like a war.

Well, hopefully UMichigan won’t be seen as “Underrated” soon. It is a good school. I think both WashU and UMichigan are terrific schools and now it’s up to the OP to decide.

Good to see school pride and representation for UC Berkeley. Seriously I’m starting to think maybe these three schools are ALL terrific. For public schools UCBerkeley and UMichigan are both very good. I mean, WashU, UCB, and UCM are all top institutions. And they are off by several decimals in the PA rankings. However they will differ in their undergraduate life quality/ happiness of students/ location/ accessibility to professors / class sizes. For example, personally I would want to go to WashU based on these factors. However now I’m going to look into UMichigan as well. Anyways, it’s up to the OP to weigh the pros and cons of each school and then decide where to go.

That said, I want to thank the OP for applying as an international AND getting into both Washington University in St. Louis and University of Michigan. Congratulations! Hope you will be able to decide soon ^_^

I agree. However, one other significant factor is cost. I’ve had coworkers send their kids to WUStL and Rice over UCs and Stanford because the out-of-pocket costs were cheaper.

You won’t be very happy if you’re burdened with student loan debt later just to have a slightly better undergrad experience right now.

And yet ppl still pick Yale, Princeton, Duke, or any other top 20 schools over UMich for grad studies in those programs. =)

zenith, I was being sarcastic. To call these two world renown institutions “very good school,s I mean considering their PUBLIC”, if you get my emphasis.
