Which one should I choose? UMich or WUSTL

rjkofnovi keeps saying: “see I can do the same thing for UMich”. It’s like…DUH! They’re both good schools, of course they share many similar things except for school spirits, campus size, and weather. -__-

School Spirit: Michigan>WUSTL
Campus Size: Michigan>WUSTL
Weather: Michigan=WUSTL

Perhaps the school “spirits” are more potent at WUSTL?

“And yet ppl still pick Yale, Princeton, Duke, or any other top 20 schools over UMich for grad studies in those programs. =):”

That’s complete nonsense. I won’t even start to go into details, it would be an exhaustive list, except that Michigan for example completely blows away Yale and Duke for almost every known graduate program in engineering.

“Browse the social sciences, law, engineering, business, heck even other programs such as education, social work, library science, public health and nursing. You will find that Michigan is ranked in the top ten in most of those categories.”

You forgot Medicine, Dentistry, Public Policy, Pharrnacy, Natural Resources, Kinesiology, Information Science, Music, among others.

“School Spirit: Michigan>WUSTL”
Totally agree with this.

“Campus Size: Michigan>WUSTL”
Agree if bigger means better. Too bad it’s not always the case. =)

“Weather: Michigan=WUSTL”
Yeah, right. Maybe ur skincells are already dead after spending one winter at UMich.

“That’s complete nonsense. I won’t even start to go into details, it would be an exhaustive list”

I dont think it not nonsense, but it’s reality. =)

BearCub. It’s quite obvious that you have very little idea about prestige at the graduate level. Michigan is equal to, and in most cases better than, at least half of the schools rated in the top 20 at USNWR in overall graduate academic prestige and quality in most comparable disciplines. This includes WUSTL .

^^ I know Michigan has many great graduate programs. Maybe the correct word to describe those programs is excellent. But you should know that most people would still choose Ivies or top private schools over UMich for those programs that UMich are good at.
Also, at undergraduate level…those WUSTL students who are from Michigan, they used UMich as their safety school when applying to college. Cos most of the top high school students from Michigan would rather attend out of state top private universities than UMich.

Er…no. I mean, if it came down between Princeton and Michigan, nearly all would choose Princeton in a heartbeat.

Michigan against Vanderbilt or Rice? 90 times out of 100, Michigan stomps them into the ground.

This thread is growing increasingly pointless. Although I stand by my point earlier that only the OP can decide and that they’re both great choices, I second those who say Michigan may be the better choice for an international student.

"But you should know that most people would still choose Ivies or top private schools over UMich for those programs that UMich are good at. "

I should know? I think you’re the one in need of an education about graduate programs. Michigan even beats Ivy Schools, including some of the top ones, in quite a few comparable disciplines.

" Cos most of the top high school students from Michigan would rather attend out of state top private universities than UMich."

Statistics to prove your point please?

U of M is a really great school. It’s not too big that you would not get personal attention but if that is what you are REALLY looking for then go to WashU.
WashU is amazing from what I know. I visited the campus and I was like…what??? It was real, real, real nice.
But keep in mind U of M is known internationally and has so many more options outside whatever major you may be thinking about- which you more that likely might change.

wow… I didn’t expect this fight just over one night.

Well, I have to clarify something.

 1. I applied for undergraduate studies. (But you guys can still discuss the graduate program :D)
 2. Yes, the money issue. There is difference between UMich and WUSTL… about $1000 perhaps?
 3. International reputation? Well I don’t really care, all the thing I care is academia. (all right, living environment too, but I assume both UMich and WUSTL has beautiful campus) And the truth indeed is most of people in my country only know Harvard Yale MIT or Stanford, so pass the reputation thing.

oh, finally, I am male, so please don’t use “she”. After all, how many girls you know watched Transformers the cartoon?

But thank ALL OF YOU (again) for the awesome informations! (though some contradicted each other completely which made me pretty confused)

OP, may I know which country you are from?

Internationally, people would be more impressed if you graduated from UMichigan.

^^ Yeah, rite. I dont think so. And I’m an international student. People will be able to tell u that they’ve heard of the school name before…just like people in general have heard of University of Phoenix. But they wont give u the same kinda reaction as if you tell them that you are from Duke, HYPSM, and other ivies. I’m not saying WUSTL does have that.

“But they wont give u the same kinda reaction as if you tell them that you are from Duke, HYPSM, and other ivies.”

I think you are overplaying the Duke card as well. The OP is actually correct. Really the only schools in the U.S. that have national AND international prestige are HYPSM and maybe Caltech.

I dispute the assertion that UM has better reputation than WashU internationally, which may be true ten or fifteen years ago. Nowadays, international students & parents pay attention to the USNWR ranking, because they have to pay very high fees. Thus, they have been reading the USNWR for many years, which has consistently ranked WUSTL higher than UM.

“Thus, they have been reading the USNWR for many years, which has consistently ranked WUSTL higher than UM.”

USNWR is biased against public universities. For example, UC-Berkeley doesn’t even crack the top-20 on the U.S. News Best Colleges rankings. Do you honestly believe WUSTL is more prestigious internationally than UC-Berkeley?

^^In a word, NO! For the millionth time, graduate schools and research are what make a university internationally famous. WUSTL is very good, but others in this country are better overall at that level. Those include such schools as JHU, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
