I’m an upcoming senior from a high school in Ohio and I really want to double major in Astronomy and Physics. I really want to go to college in Arizona, if I can afford it, but I can’t decide which one would be better, ASU or UofA. I’ve seen that UofA is pretty well-known for their astronomy program, for a non-ivy league school, but when I was looking at ASU they have a really interesting major called Earth and Space Exploration that has a mix of astronomy, geology and engineering. Also, when I was looking up these schools I saw that UofA is very Greek dominated and that almost everyone is in a Greek and people tend to be pretty stuck up and you wouldn’t really have a social life unless you’re in a Greek. This worries me because since I’m an African-american I feel like I would be singled out unlike I would if I went to ASU. The only downfall of ASU is their reputation, which I don’t really mind because I do want to party here and there but I feel that if I wouldn’t be taken seriously when I tell people I go to ASU. But anyways, what would be the best school for astronomy&physics and/or overall social experience?

What campus is the major on at ASU? That would be a huge factor for me. There are 3 campus far away from the main campus. I would never send my kid to ASU unless they were on the main campus- just my opinion.

Greek Life at UofA is 13%. There are a lot kids there who do not participate in Greek Life. I don think there is less to do at UofA if you are not Greek because the town is a little sleepier then Tempe.

I think you could have a great social experience at either school. I would continue to research and also come look at both campuses. I personally think that UofA feels more traditional then ASU in campus feel and brick and mortar.

I don’t know where you heard that Greek Life rumor. From my experience as a U of A student, I can say that it is not true. Do people participate in Greek Life? Yes. But no more or less than any other major university.

If you are serious about Astronomy and Physics, then the U of A’s program is the way to go.
