Allright, so I want to take the pre-med route, have good grades and ACT, but don't know which university/college has the better pre-med science classes. Could anyone tell me of the top ones based on how many students are accepted to med school or quality of science classes or MCAT prep? BTW I live in IL.

I have seen other posts with the same question, but people answering don't really talk about the pre-med program, just that its harder and if I am sure to commit. Lol I would appreciate top couple schools in the best way you would rank it. Thank you!

Depaul University
Northwestern Univ.
U of Chicago
UIC
UIUC
Loyola Univ.
Elmhurst college
Notre Dame Univ.

If there are other recommended ones, I'd appreciate hearing them. Thanx a lot!

Could anyone tell me of the top ones based on how many students:

are accepted to med school: not important;

quality of science classes: varies from school to school, even within same course (eg Bio 101) at same college with different profs:

MCAT prep: “pre med” profs don’t teach to the MCAT, they just teach bio, chem, physics, etc.

Getting into med school is all about your performance at any college on your list, not the school you graduate from.

The best premed is one where you will fit in (academically, socially, etc) as if you’re happy with overall environment you’re more likely to do well in classes which tends to translate into better grades (GPAs). The worst premed is one where you will not fit in (academically, socially, etc), become miserable, do poorly in your classes, watch your GPA plummet as well as your med school dreams disappear.

The best premed is one where you will graduate with little or no debt as most med school is paid for via loans, not scholarships. The worst premed is one where you will graduate with enormous debt as most med school is paid for via loans, not scholarships.

Using above as starting point and since you know yourself and circumstances better than us, how would you rank the above schools and why?

has the better pre-med science classes.

…NONE HAS BETTER. Premed prereqs are basic lower division, nothing-special classes.

Could anyone tell me of the top ones based on how many students are accepted to med school
… this answer tells you NOTHING. It doesn’t tell you how many were premeds as frosh, how many got weeded out, nor how many applied. And since it doesn’t tell you what these kids stats are, the data is further meaningless.

or quality of science classes
… The quality at all will be MORE THAN FINE. These are basic staple classes within basic staple majors. NOTHING SPECIAL

or MCAT prep?
… Schools do NOT prepare you for the MCAT. NO! These are basic STEM classes that other STEM students are taking. MCAT prep is up to YOU.

BTW I live in IL.
… What are your parents saying about paying for these schools? particularly the privates you have listed that give lousy aid. Did you have your parents run the NPCs on each school’s site? What did they say about the results???

You mention that you would need at least $20k in merit to attend Loyola-Chicago. So does that mean that your parents have said that they will (for sure) pay $25k per year? If not, how much will they pay?

How will med school get paid?

I want to add a comment…You have very good stats, but at those top listed schools, you would be an average student. WHY WOULD anyone want to be an average student at a school where they will be premed??? You will want to SHINE at your undergrad. You won’t want to be the “ok student” who profs won’t be motivated to write glowing LORs.

kids make this mistake all the time. If you truly want to to go med school, GO WHERE YOU WILL SHINE.

@master1006

and if I were you, I’d go where I could get MORE merit so that my family could help with med school costs.

So you’re saying DONT go to any of these schools? Honestly though, and you might call me narrow-minded, I want to stay in-state

No, I’m not saying to not go to any of those schools. UIUC, UIC, Loyola Chicago, and Elmhurst are all fine. The other ones will be more loaded with super stat kids who will be added competition for the A’s in your classes.

How much will your parents pay each year? If you don’t know, ask them.

Choose the one that you personally like the best and it helps a lot if it is cheap / free.
med. School is expensive. One aspect could be taken care of is financial. Nothing else, really. You just need to get very high GPA, decent MCAT, medical ECs, grow personally. College has practically no effect on any of these, they will be up to YOU and you only to achieve.
