Which range of schools do YOU consider "elite"? HYPSM? Top 20?

Mercer County Community College is the best school in Mercer County. That alone confers it an elite status. It is the BEST in a certain category.

Yes, your flawless argument certainly leaves little to debate.

Jersey13, I think you may be overlooking that there may be orthodox jews or mormons in Mercer county.

It gets very complicated, doesn’t it…

BTW I imagine yeshiva and BYU win tons of cross-admit battles. And for pretty much the same reason. IMO. They would not win them if the people who did not even care enough about them to apply were forced to apply there though. They have an esteem within their own community that is not equally shared by the public at large outside of that community. IMO.

My apologies, I seem to have forgotten that Catholicism is the only sect of any religion that matters in the United States.

Yeah, I didn’t mean to denigrate Emory by saying ‘even’, I meant that its a relative newcomer to the “elite” status in terms of age/national reputation so not as many know about it like they do Northwestern, Duke, ND, Vanderbilt. But yes, its right up there also.

I wonder how much of this rabid resistance to calling ND an elite university stems from some kind of anti-Catholicism? Its kind of weird that only some real Ivy bluebloods seems to be seething about ND’s inclusion.

I feel the Top 20 Universities and Top 10 LACs are all pretty much up there. I think that’s a good limit.

and on top of that, I am bringing sexy back…

Top 20 and Top 10 LACs.

^Does that mean Davidson > Georgetown?

Top 30 unis and top 30 LAC’s pretty much covers it.

HYPSM, Caltech, Duke, Columbia, Penn, Dartmouth, AWS, West Point

i don’t see why there always needs to be all these stupid discussions.

People just need to notice that most successful people are ones that aim for the prestigious schools anyways, which in turn, just makes them more and more prestigious to the rest of the world. If you were a hardworking and diligent individual, it doesn’t matter where you come from, you will succeed if you were meant to. At the same time, you could graduate from Harvard, Princeton or Yale, and if you’re a dummy, or lazy, it doesn’t matter what your diploma says, every future employer will probably fire you.

And once you get into college, you’ll realize that while a school’s alumni base is important in many ways, one of the least important ways is networking. Yes, you will hear the occasional story where a high-flying alumni grants a student some rare internship or job, but that’s 1 out of 1000, and most often has more to do with the student, than just the student being at the school.

Anyways, this same thread in a slightly different variation is bound to occur again in another few weeks when someone wonders what schools are elite and where to apply.

just my 2cents.

The funny thing is, that post wasn’t less intelligent than any of your so-called arguments on this thread.

The flaws in this argument have already been addressed. The more specific you get, the more worthless your distinction is. What other Catholic schools does it even compete with?

I’m sure they win a disproportionate (not necessarily majority) share of the extremely minuscule number of cross-admits they have.

I’m sick and tired of the Ivy elitism on this board and on CC. Yes, there might be differences between Ivies and Top 30 non-Ivies, but in the grand scheme of things, these schools are among the best out of 4,000 colleges in the country. Can’t we all just agree that ND is an excellent school, instead of making it look like some crappy school? The Ivy Leaguers on this thread should not be calling schools like ND inferior. By denigrating ND and other non-Ivies, you are only fueling the stereotype that Ivy League schools are full of elitism (of course, I don’t buy into this stereotype, but your antagonistic arguments aren’t helping). The truth of the matter is that there are tons of outstanding universities, Ivies and non-Ivies, in this country, and it is up to the student to make the most of the experiences. The name is only part of the picture. I’m glad my friends in the Ivies right now find better things to do with their time than argue that their school is superior to other top 30 schools.

Ivy League, CC Top Universities, CC Top Liberal Arts Colleges

hawkette, are you kidding me?

are you saying that I discussed Catholics and the President and Kennedy here?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1064875164-post296.html

what in the world are you talking about?

shanka, tell us, what school did Obama go to?

Seeing as the only thing we have attempted to argue in this thread is summarized your second statement, I’m a bit confused as to how that perpetuates elitism.

No one has tried to make ND look like a crappy school. People are simply making comparisons between ND and other schools to show that there is some degree of difference. In fact, most people on this thread (including myself) agree that ND is a very good school.

Once again, I don’t see how you concluded that the arguments in this thread have been solely Ivy League vs. Every Other Top School. The majority of posters have stated that the most elite sub-group of excellent schools is HYPSM, a group in which two out of the five schools are not even Ivy League institutions.

Read the title of this thread.

lesdia, please tell me you are kidding?

so are you saying that the top school in student suicides should be an elite school also?

how about the stop school in gay activism?

should that school be an elite school?

what we are saying here is that Notre Dame is no where near the level of the Ivies in almost any measure of quality education and selectivity

lesdia, are you kidding me again?

the very smart catholic kids wouldn’t even think of going to Notre Dame.

they would go to HYPSM

regarding catholics, HYP would be in the 95/5 cross admits level with lowly Notre Dame

stop this nonsense
