Worst. Question. Ever.

People who say Stanford is more prestigious probably just look at USNWR.

People who say Columbia is more prestigious probably are just blinded by "Ivy League."

It's subjective, I think.

I think it's an interesting question, though. They're both so different, IMO.

So subjective...so many variables...not worth trying to determine which one is 'most prestigious'...you will have a nearly 50/50 split on people's opinions...and remember: Opinions are like a**holes...everyone has one, and they all stink!

"People who say Stanford is more prestigious probably just look at USNWR."

Most people in the world, esp. outside of U.S., don't pay attention to USNWR at all. Regardless, Stanford's prestige around the globe is tremendous because of its academic merits. Like I said, Stanford ranks top 5 in almost every single discipline of academics, something Columbia can't boost about.

I'm from Long Island, so naturally I feel that Columbia is more prestigious than Stanford. But what everyone else said is true: after a certain point, prestige isn't a factor.

gadad: I'm from the southeast too, and I know of multiple people in my area that have and will apply to Stanford, but none that have or plan on applying to Columbia. I wouldn't say that makes it more prestigious to people in the southeast, but its just a little bit of personal experience.

IMHO, though, I would say that Stanford is a tad more prestigious than Columbia, but that's just my personal view.

Dude, it's cool. Typos are just a pet peeve of mine.

Don't take it personal.

I just cannot resist. Typos may be YOUR pet peeve, but poor grammar is mine. Please, it is 'take it PERSONALLY'. That would be 'ly' on your adverb, sir. How do you take it? Personally? Then it has to have 'ly' on the end of it. Whenever a word answers the question 'How?', that signals that the word is an adverb in almost all cases (there may be an exception somewhere out there, but generally it is an adverb) and so the adverb needs an 'ly' on the end (in most cases. There may be some adverbs that would look ridiculous with an 'ly', but this time, 'ly' please.).

:) Have a nice day, and I enjoy all the posts!

columbia has a way cooler name. colummmbiA. and it has history back to Alexander Friggin' Hamilton. stanford just sounds like it should be the last name of some railroad worker.

Something called slang, juststoppingby?

I know it's supposed to be "personally." Jeez. Hm, in retrospect, maybe I should've rephrased it as: "Nothing personal." Whatever.

ANOTHER one of my pet peeves is verbosity. You could've just said the grammatically correct solution in a concise, single sentence.

Oh, and I never even mentioned my personal preference/perception of which one is more prestigious; to me, subjectively speaking, I see Stanford as more prestigious than Columbia, though it's probably equally difficult to get into either school.

Stanford is more prestigious to me and I came from Asia.

Would it be wrong to say that Stanford's campus looks like the most magnificent and ambitious Taco Bell ever? Probably, so I won't.

You think so? I think it sounds like it could be some developing country with a huge drug trafficking problem.

I never said Columbia was more prestigious. They are both equal, but my last comment was directed at those who think Stanford is better, and many people think this because of the rankings.

I'm from a major east coast city, and I would say that, in my experience, most people think that Stanford is more prestigious Columbia. I mean, Columbia is thought of as a good school, but most people put Stanford on a whole other level (w/ MIT, Harvard, Yale, Princeton).

Stanford is more prestigious in my book. Stanford does everything as well as Columbia does, but its engineering/ Comupter Science trumps Columbia. The access to Silicon Valley Companies and firms (VC) only adds to its appeal.

stanford/.....

Stanford ftw

Stanford is more prestigious.

It is not a dumb question. Prestige matters- and depending on what you want to do (and where you want to do it), it can be quite an important factor.

Though they are both extremely good institutions, there is still a difference at this level.

Some of you just need to unclench with the typo-anal rants. If a post offends you this much; don't post in the thread.
