Which school is more prestigious? Stanford or Columbia? Solely based on prestige, which schools wins?

Standford, No questions asked... they are both very very prestigious no question there... but Standford...

First of all, it's STANFORD. Get it right, please!

Second of all, this is possibly the dumbest question I've ever heard. They're BOTH prestigious and BOTH excellent schools. Both schools' acceptance rates dropped considerably this year, single digits for both, I believe.

Your answers will be based on where the person who replies is from--if from California, then Stanford. If from East Coast, then Columbia is preferred. Of course, this is just speaking very generally. Both are no question very prestigious, can't really get more prestigious than this.

Both schools are incredibly well recognized and to bring up a question of which school is more prestigious reflects more on what kind of person you are and how wrong you are looking at schools in your college search simply asking about prestige and not about factors of certain majors, programs, environment, etc.

You should be asking yourself, which place do I like better? Where can I see myself for the next 4 years? Is attending this school financially feasible? etc etc

Unless you've been accepted to both schools, if I were you I'd worry first about the chances of GETTING IN, not OMG which one is more prestigious?!

hostasice shouldn't be so hostile. there's no need to hurt other people's feelings. i know people say that it's not good to choose a school by prestige, but come on. it's ok to show off now and then. to say that prestige didn't play a role in my college decision would be a lie. anyways, to answer you question, i'd say that stanford has a more universal prestige than columbia.

I agree that I think I came off a bit too strongly than I intended... but when you're at the level of Stanford and Columbia, asking which one is more prestigious in one's decision-making is like asking if Princeton is more prestigious than Yale.

I agree that people often choose schools based on prestige, but honestly, prestige at this point shouldn't be the tipping factor.

Neither. If I had to pick I would choose Columbia, but both of them are basically equal.

possibly the dumbest post ever...

wow cdk that was quite mean! i would have to give stanford the edge in prestige. columbia is an ivy league, but is one of the lesser known ivy leagues.

FDR kicks Hoover's ass. Columbia!

i think most people would agree that stanford is tad bit more prestigious.

Schools are prestigious FOR A REASON. What the reason is, well that's the whole issue. WHY is Stanford better than Columbia, or WHY is Columbia better than Stanford (depends on your own opinions)? If you can answer WHY, then you can say which school is more 'prestigious'....Frankly, even considering either one is a big achievement. When you get into this level of academics, talking about two schools like Stanford and Columbia, it's irrelevant which one is more 'prestigious'. If you walk up to ANYONE and tell them you are a student at Columbia, or Stanford, they'll have alot of respect for you.

I wonder what Stanford's reputation really is in the Southeast? In GA, if I
asked most folks about it, I think I'd get responses based upon their athletic teams. When comparing Stanford's draw to that of eastern universities, you need to remember that Stanford is the only elite private university on the entire west coast (one of two if you count Cal Tech, but that's < 1,000 undergrads so it's not a serious consideration for that many people. Columbia is one of at least a dozen elite privates on the eastern seaboard, so the attention to top schools is split at least that many ways.

Both are extremely prestigious, no difference really.

Here on CC though, people would like to think of HYPSM are leagues beyound everywhere else.

Oops! brain fart... haha... you don't have to be an *** over it though...

Dude, it's cool. Typos are just a pet peeve of mine.

Don't take it personal.

Hotasice did go on a bit of a rant, but he/she is right. OP, the problem with your question is that it demonstrates a very superficial way of thinking, that the only thing that matters is what is going to look the best to others, which sticker on the back of the car window will be more impressive down at the club. Is this how you will make all the important decisions in your life? Then you will never be happy with anything because there will always be a newer, shinier, flashier, more prestigious model. Choose based on more tangible, personal factors, whether they are location, cost, campus environment, relative quality of programs, or just personal fit.

Even if you can't see or understand that, prestige isn't something that can be specifically measured. While you can generalize about prestige, above a certain level there is not a definitive discernible difference. All you will get are opinions that are biased by unknown factors. As Hotasice said, the guy from the West Coast will say Stanford and the guy from the East will say Columbia (and the guy from Boston will say Harvard and the graduate of Cornell or Brown or Emory or Duke will say . . . well, you can guess.)

Be a little more questioning and don't automatically accept the labels someone else puts on things. How would you rank a school if you didn't already know how someone else had ranked it?

I don't know why people are being hostile here, really. What is wrong with asking which school is more prestigious, and you can tell that OP is not choosing the school based on this, but OP is simply asking.

Although both Stanford and Columbia are very prestigious, the majority of people would agree that Stanford is regarded in higher regard. The reason for Stanford's fame and prestige is because it excels in so many different fields. Stanford ranks top 10 in overall undergrad ranking, MBA, Law, Medicine, Engineering, and many different Ph.D. programs. Stanford is also widely regarded as the leading science-research university in the world along with MIT. Columbia excels in many areas as well, but not as extensively as Stanford.

Realistically, a vast majority of the people attending the best "Ivy League" schools haven't asked themselves these questions.

Anyway, to answer OP's question, Stanford, hands down.
Why this is a matter of dispute confuses me.

well you know what??? i'm sick of your **** ... lol jk...I was just posting to make sure you knew I wasn't all that mad...just more defensive... and i apologize for a typo?

Yes, people are being really hostile here. I just wanted to know everyone's opinion. Yes, I know one should not choose a school just because of prestige. I've already chosen the school I'm going to so this questions does not necessarily concern my own personal issues. I was just asking a question.
