I got accepted to four schools. It is really hard to make a decision.

Cornell CALS- animal science major (waiting for financial packet)

Case Western Reserve University- Biology major (with $42000 grants)

UCLA- Biophysics major(I am a oos student. with $22000 grants/ should pay $33000 for tuition and room and board)

UCSD- Biology major (condition is almost same as UCLA)

They’re all great schools and doing premed at any of them would be fine. How do you like each school, which ones do you like as far as location, atmosphere, major, etc.?

All things being equal, which they usually aren’t, right now the UCs look out of the picture based on cost (assuming that COA for Case is 15ish k); hopefully you’ll get the Cornell offer soon.

IMO, it’s silly to pay OOS prices for UC for premed; I would assume that you could probably attend your instate Uni for (nearly?) free. If so, UC is a total waste of your money.

Between the other two, location/environment is a big factor. Do you want urban-city or small town upstate?

The other key factor is transfers. Cornell is transfer-friendly, but I dunno about CWRU. Obviously, CW is much smaller, and so is the transfer class.

The advantage of going CWRU is that their financial aid is the most generous so far. In addition, CWRU is renowned for Biological and medical fields. However, since CRWU is comparably small university, many people never heard about it.

Cornell is one part of Ivy league, and I don’t doubt this will provide a great education with generous grants. Moreover, the campus is fantastic and foods are awesome there. However, some of my friends said that my major ‘animal science’ might not fit for pre-med.

UCLA $ UCSD are good and popular schools. As long as I know, those schools have very strong biology $ biophysics programs. However, I will have a lot of debt when I will graduate.

I have to confirm CWRU until May 1, but I don’t know I should give up other schools such as Cornell, UCLA, and JHU(still waiting for decision) or just go to CWRU.

*UCLA $ UCSD are good and popular schools. As long as I know, those schools have very strong biology $ biophysics programs. However, I will have a lot of debt when I will graduate. *

???

WHAT?

Why are you even considering any undergrad that would leave you with large debt when you graduate??? That’s nuts.

How much will your parents pay? How much would you borrow? HOW would you borrow? What naive and gullible person would co-sign?

Do you have to be animal science at Cornell? Can you change that? I think Miami’s D was a zoology major and she’s in med school. I don’t know if that’s similar to animal science.

“CRWU is comparably small university, many people never heard about it.”
-??? Not in pre-med crowd, not in Medical world. They never heard about Cleveland Clinic?..no way…It is a big name as far as I know…

…BTW, insider info, JHU has sent their full tuition Merits, somebody that I know recieved it. I do not know if they spread their announcements or do them all at once, you might still get something…if you are waiting. I heard though (never visited) that location of JHU is pretty bad.

If you’re a westerner, then probably many haven’t heard of CWRU. Heck, Westerners are terrible about knowing about other schools outside the area besides ivies, MIT, Notre Dame and a few others.

Don’t worry…the med schools will know about CWRU…they respect the school. Do not pay OOS rates at a UC if it means debt. That’s nuts.

How are you paying the rest of the costs of the other schools?

^That is evem more surprising as CRWU Medical school has the most representation fromm…California, by huge margin too, Berkeley beats in numbers CRWU own pre-emds. However, this is at Med. School level, but based on that I assume that most pre-meds are aware of popular Medical schools especially if many from their own state are going there.

@MiamiDAP Well. I live in New York, and they still don’t know about CWRU.

Someone really think CUNY Hunter is better than CWRU :(

I think it is possible going to Cornell animal science and go to medical school after. I think people do think the major animal science not ‘fancy’ or ‘sophisticated’ what I don’t really understand.

@mom2collegekids My parents said they can pay up to $20000 per year for me.

That means I will have $13000 debts each year if I go to UC.

Do you think it worth having approximately $26000 debts and going to UC?

Moreover, I have to make decision going to CWRU or not by 5/1(and Cornell by 5/11).

I think JHU will give me decision mid to late May(I emailed them and they replied like that).

In this case, should I give up CWRU and Cornell to wait for JHU?(In this case, I should automatically go to UC if JHU rejects me).

So…the main reason you’re considering giving up CWRU is because of its lack of notoriety among your friends/peers/colleagues/whatever?

Great school with lots of merit aid. You don’t know how much you’ll get (if any) from Hopkins yet. And it’s probably not smart to go to UC from out of state–not to mention, flying across the country to visit home (do you ever plan to do that?) will be pretty pricey!

IF I were comfortable with all the schools, I’d go CWRU for sure.

NOOOOO. You should automatically drop UC from your list. Period.

Most New Yorkers don’t know much about anything west of the Hudson. :D

btw: it is rather easy to change your major at Cornell. But you are instate for Cornell-CALS. And you would pay OOS for UC instead? To borrow mom2’s line: “That’s nuts.”

Have you called up the schools and requested a later response deadline from CWRU and an early read on your FA by Cornell? Transfer notifications and deadlines are a pain because they’re not consistent like for fr admissions, if necessary, you can put a deposit down at Case/Cornell and if you decide to attend JHU, forfeit it. I don’t recommend this for fr admissions, but sometimes it is necessary for transfers.

I agree, the money doesn’t make any sense, particularly with the offer you already have from Case. And don’t forget many students at UCs are on the 5-yr plan since they are sometimes unable to take necessary coursework, so the price tag could end up being even higher.
