Hey guys this is my first post on CC so I just wanted to throw out a question for you guys and get some feedback. So I'm a Junior from PA graduating in 2012 and I've been getting into the college search process for the past few months. Right now I have a list of 4 schools as my current favorites, which school do you guys think is the best and why? I plan on majoring in either Communications or Business.

-Pitt
-Penn State (University Park)
-Allegheny College
-Richmond

Thanks in advance for the feedback!

Don’t know about communications, but for business it’s Penn State (Univ. Park) hands down.

“Best” in what way? As far as national academic reputation, Penn State. BUT PSU is very different from U of Richmond – one is a very large public and the other a smaller liberal-arts university. Also, Pitt gives you the option of being in a city and for communications that might make a difference, whereas Penn State is in a college town, and it’s isolated out there.

You should try to visit to get the feel of these different places. If possible, visit a class.
I believe Richmond’s business program is respected – but there is a cost difference between Richmond and the in-state tuition at the PA schools.

Keep in mind that “best” for others in the college search may not be best for you.

Copterguy, I have visited Allegheny, Pitt, and PSU and will be visiting Richmond on June 9th. One of the major reasons I’m leaning a little bit towards PSU right now is for what you touched on above: in-state tution that will get me a respectable degree in the workfield. Richmond has a beautiful campus from what I hear, but it’s around $50,000 a year for all fees and I feel that I would have more fun at Penn State for a much cheaper price.

Penn State (University Park)

Great campus, great sports, great alumni network

Penn State for in-state tuition vs. $50,000/year at a private?
No brainer-Penn State.

I would place them in this order"

Penn State
Pitt
U Richmond
Allengeny

I would go to them in this order: Richmond, Pitt, PSU, then Allegheny. I really loved Richmond and it was one of my top choices. However, you would have to want a small school experience to like that, because it is significantly smaller than either Pitt or PSU. Richmond is a no-brainer, for me.

I thoink both Pitt and Penn State are nice schools, and it really comes down to what you want from your school. Neither school has such an advantage that you would be silly to choose it. I prefer Pitt, but that’s just me. Pitt has some cool guaranteed grad or professional school admissions programs which are worth looking into if you have the scores (1400 seems to be the magic number). They also have an honors college that I thought looked like a really good program, however Schreyer is considered better (and I think it is; many have chosen it over Ivy caliber schools). The kids from my high school that choose between these schools are pretty split in where they actually matriculate.
