wow, i am in the EXACT same position...

I started numerous threads about this dilemma, and got a lot of helpful replies. The thread titles do not have Amherst in them as I did not hear from it till a day later, but if you keep reading the posts eventually you will see Amherst being discussed too. Hope they help

Btw, I have decided, I am going to Amherst. So you know the choice I made :)

Wow! This is the exact same decision my D is making. She's at NU today, seeing it for the first time. What are the factors that led you to choose Amherst?

We visited NU and D decided not to apply. Don't get me wrong - it's a perfect fit for others, but certain things tilted her away from it. The difficulty of taking classes in other schools (You apply to the school, not the university) - Amherst allows you to take whatever you want outside of freshman seminar and major requirements. And the frshman seminars are many and cover all aspects of the students' interests - from writing to sciences, etc. D was in the Renaissance Marvels and they went to visit the Folger and handle Shakespearian First Folios, then to NY to museums and a Broadway play. Class sizes large vs. small, and professor support. The strict major requirements at NU vs. the ability to structure your own major at Amherst. D has a friend at Amherst who is creating her own major with help of her advisor. D will either double major or create a major incorporating both. It works for D.

Great info. Thanks very much.
