“I feel like Stanford has a legitimate claim to the crown of most well rounded school, but not Northwestern.”

I agree, it’s just that Northwestern can make a better claim to be more well rounded than Duke. Btw here is another preposterous statement for you; Michigan is more well rounded than any of these three schools. Michigan offers 12 undergraduate colleges to its students, with almost all of them ranking among the very best in the country. Overall school spirit and athletics at Michigan rival any college in the country.

Perhaps an alternative measure of “overrated” is how much debt students are willing to take on to attend. On [CollegeData: College Search, Financial Aid, College Application, College Scholarship, Student Loan, FAFSA Info, Common Application](http://www.collegedata.com) , one can get a list of 142 colleges where average student debt is over $35,000. The high debt schools include a number of for-profit schools like Full Sail with an average debt load of $63,978, but also some otherwise-generally-considered-respectable non-profit schools:

Rose-Hulman $42,689
Case Western Reserve $39,886
Villanova $38,055
Fordham $38,150
American $37,674
Trinity $37,261
Butler $36,925
Boston U $36,488
New York U $36,351
Spelman $35,138
Wake Forest $35,070

I, too, admit that I once included Penn among the ‘lesser Ivies.’ I’ve now reversed that position. It’s actually a bit underrated from what I’ve seen. I can only remember seeing one non-Wharton Penn thread on this forum, as if the rest of the university wasn’t worth considering.

I think the University System of Ohio is underrated. I’ve never seen anyone on here mention it. Texas’ public school systems are underrated too.

If you want to talk about underrated public universities, there may also be Rutgers, given the large number of New Jersey residents posting here who want to go anywhere but Rutgers.

There also seems to be a generalized disdain for public universities in New York and the New England states.

Every school you mentioned is at the top of the us news rankings (not that they matter). So I wouldn’t say these schools have been overlooked. You mentioned Cornell, an Ivy as well. I would be honored to be accepted to all these schools. MIT is possible the best school some consider (atleast for engineering) and JHU for medical.

Rutgers and Vanderbilt more fit the ‘overlooked’ category

Deep Springs. Even the educationally-elite set don’t understand how amazing it is. I dissuaded Baudrillard with a grad, and he was simply on another level. The entire school is unbelievable. It’s not for me, or for most people, but I think people who care about colleges would be fascinated if they heard more than “it’s a good school”
