Which schools do you think are overrated? underrated? (For consistency, my suggestion is to use USNWR rankings and public perception). This is just for entertainment and general information, who knows someone may find a great match on this thread...

Overrated: The University of Pennsylvania, Duke University, the University of Notre Dame, Rice University, Vanderbilt, and Washington University in St. Louis.

Underrated: The University of Michigan, the University of California-Berkeley, the University of Chicago, Cornell University, Georgetown University, and The University of California- Los Angeles.

underrated: NYU, Rice, Oberlin, Davidson, Grinnell, UC Berkeley
overrated: Penn, Columbia, UVA, James Madison, Penn state (at least where I come from)

The UCs are not overrated... they are full of good students, but the education they provide is all T.A.s and large lectures.

Northwestern is underrated, at least from my perspective, in public opinion ( I think US News gets it right).. out here in california, nobody has even heard of it.

Overrated in USNWR: Notre Dame, Cornell, WUSTL, Berkeley, Penn
Underrated: Georgetown, UCSC (should be low, but not that low)

I'm only using US News here because "public perception" is too subjective.

Overrated: Wisconisin, Illinois, Penn State, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, Yeshiva University, Rochester, Tulane, RPI, Case Western, Rutgers, Penn(deserves high ranking but not over Stanford Duke, and MIT)

Underrated: Georgetown, George Washington University, NYU, University of Georgia, University of Miami, Boston University, Florida State University,

overrated means that everyone thinks this school is great and has outstanding out of this world academics and student body. when actually, it isn't allt aht exceptional as you'd expect.

underrated means that you don't really respect the university/college. you don't exactly expect a great student body or a good education there.

that's why I think Ivies are overrated. you're basically paying for a name. UCs are great schools, it's just that they're public and they don't exactly have too much money. UCs are great research schools, Cal has discovered two elements. YOU DON'T SEE ANY STANFORDIUM!
