Now I know most of us are under the dillusion that the USNEWS rankings were given to Moses from God, but lets us for a moment divert from scripture and take a moment to ponder what colleges are the most vastly overrated.

I've heard Georgetown mentioned alot, as well as Harvard, Tufts and Johns Hopkins.

Try to refrain from the "school that fits" argument. Would anyone care to elaborate on this dillema? First is it true that these schools are overrated? And secondly, why are they overrated in the first place? Is it simply a mater of changing times, or are these schools really not all that different from the other schools in the top 50?

I think John Hopkins is pretty overrated. My friend made it to John Hopkins even though he DIDNT get into UCLA or UC Berkeley. It happens all the time. John Hopkins and cornell are not as good as the best UC's.

Why is Hopkins overrated? Best medical/poly sci/nes studies programs in the country...just doesn't make sense as to why they would be overrated.

Some of the Ivy's I can understand, not because they are bad schools but because people look at them the same way they look at eternal paradise in the clouds. Harvard could never possibly live up to its expectations, people going there thinking that simply by walking through the doors they will be transformed into the next Einstein. Its not reality...education is more than anything else about the student curiosity and commitment to learning. Simply being at Harvard doesn't mean anything, your not learning anything just by sitting there...believe me I've been to lectures there, no different than the lectures at your no name state school.

I'm wondering though if with other schools if its simply a matter of the impossibility of the school to live up to its repuration or if the school itself is actually just really crappy?

What's with the name calling? All he meant was that the coursework is some of the most challenging and the grade curves are the least generous. It is widely known how difficult Cornell is.

i dont think Johns Hopkins is overrated.....as a matter of fact i think its underrated. if you want to study anything with a bio concentration, engineering, IR or even language...hopkins would probably be on your list.

the most overrated are def. Wash U and Brown. is it just me, or does WashU reject no one. at my school, no one has been "rejected" in the past four years (we average about 35 applications a year). i think wash u's popularity is the result of some MAJOR marketing, not necessarily because of what is actually going on. i dont have as much of a beef with brown, but still...

yeah out of all the schools Harvard is definately overly overrated
Harvard is just all name and that is just it
people just die for the name
i truly despise it when some kids at my school cannot see any school beyond Harvard
sometimes i just wanna throw the book "Harvard Schmarvard" at their face
most if not all of them will never make it into Harvard

Please...not another one. BTW, I have NEVER seen anyone at CC post approval of US News Rankings, so its most likely the general public that you're talking about.

I would have to say Indiana University. Hoosiers don't live up to it at all. Before I got stuck coming here I never heard one bad thing about the place. Let me tell you, I cannot wait to leave here and never want to see it again.

I don't know about overrated, but most underrated university has got to be University of Guatemala.. MAN! what a place! There's harvard, yale, princeton... then there's UGuatemala

anyone else here going to be in the '09 class of UG?

This discussion is only a way for people to trash a rival school that they A) are jealous of or B) got rejected from. The Underrated colleges are usually the ones that the posters plan on attending, so these are far from objective observations.

Isn't there a more educated and civil way to discuss colleges without name-calling?

Certainly the most overrated by USNews, the most inluential poll, are WashU and Duke. These are very good schools, but putting Duke at 5th goes against logic -- it's almost an IVY safety. WashU clearly manipulates the rankings, shooting its own reputation in the foot.

I always thought NYU was overrated. It's fairly selective but when I hear kids talking about NYU, they seem to be in such awe that they place it on the same pedestal as some ivys. Maybe it's just because I live in New York.
