Hi, I was just wondering to which schools I should be applying with the following credentials:

*Undergrad: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (minors in both Computer Science and Math)
*Grad (MS): University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
*Major: Electrical Engineering (both grad and undergrad)
*GPA: 3.68 (undergrad), 3.51 (grad)
*GMAT: 740
*2 published papers
*5 years of work experience at engineering company on East Coast (possible patent pending)
*Teamleader, marketing/strategic planning committee member at volunteer organization

I would like to go into marketing. I was thinking of the following schools:

MIT
Harvard
UPenn
Columbia
Michigan
Kellogg (maybe)

What are your thoughts? Thank you in advance!

There’re a couple of reasons why I did not list Stanford (or any West Coast schools for that matter). For some reason, I just don’t like Cali that much. Never been, but heard too many stories. Also, I’ve heard that admissions at Stanford is very competitive, to the tune of only 5% being admitted. I’m sure admissions at other schools, like HBS, is also very competitive, but those schools are in my general area (within driving distance), well, except Ross, but that’s closer to my folks. I’m a little iffy on Kellogg - do you think I should apply there?

Kellogg is considered the top school for marketing. If you are serious about marketing, I’m not sure why you are applying to schools like MIT and Columbia rather than Kellogg. The rest of your list looks good. You can get good marketing jobs at slightly lower ranked schools, so I’d probably have some safety schools which are ranked highly in marketing just in case (it is hard to say what level of school you will be accepted at based on what you posted…certainly top 20…and top 5 is within reach, but certainly not a sure thing).

HBS/Wharton (maybe just one of these, leaning towards Wharton)
Kellogg
Sloan
Fuqua/Ross (leaning towards Ross, but may apply to both)

I included Sloan because I want to go into tech marketing with an engineering background, but I guess by the same token, I should also consider Stanford/Haas.

OK, let’s see. HBS would probably be a reach; Wharton and Kellogg are great in marketing; Sloan is for its techy/engineering leaning; Fuqua/Ross are both good at marketing, but they’re not ranked as high; took out Columbia, because that’s mostly for Wall Street people. At any rate, that’s my reasoning so far behind those schools.

Sorry to bump this old thread. I submitted my application for Wharton R2 a while back, and I’m waiting for an interview invite. I would like to go into energy consulting/marketing in developing countries (especially in Africa) with a focus on sustainability. Given Wharton’s reputation in finance, would they be interested in someone with my experience/background/goals? Thank you in advance!
