You’ll get an opportunity to explain not just what it is, but what you’ve been doing in that club (which is way more important)

However, to go away to school, you’ll need a budget. Start thinking about costs, running NPCs, and talking with your parents. Keep your grades up since some of the best deals will depend on good grades and excellent test scores. Start practicing on the PSAT (khan academy).
You just finished your Freshman year in high school. It is FAR too early to decide which colleges would be realistic for you. You do not know what your GPA will look like, you do not know what your test scores will look like, and you do not know what your ECs will look like.
As for colleges, we don’t know what acceptances will look like in two years. There are many changes happening in where students want to attend, with many more applying to local and in-state colleges, many colleges will be much less generous with financial support, because of the losses they are incurring this year.
You also have no idea what you would like to do, and what type of college you would like to attend.
Any advice you get now may not be relevant in two and half years, when you start applying to colleges.
Was talking with a classmate, she told me there might be a couple New extracurriculars next year: UNICEF & Amnesty International. Right in my wheelhouse.
get involved in things that you are excited to explore (not just looking good on an app) and are passionate about. Don’t spread yourself too thin.
Find out how much your family can pay for college
Consider getting a paying job if possible (hard at the moment) not just for $$ but also for experience
(my daughter’s college dream was smashed when she asked about budget and we couldn’t afford the type of school she wanted. We needed a completely different strategy. Fortunately, we had this convo back end of sophomore year so there was plenty of time to re-group and find other schools to get excited about. She ended up somewhere none of us could have predicted)
Talking to my parents about my college ideas. They set up a 529 as soon as those were a thing. They were TOTALLY unsurprised that I want a large urban diverse school. People have always good naturedly teased me about being a city girl in the boonies.
You really sound like you are where you should be regarding colleges selection. Focus on high school for the present, and see where you go regarding interests and passions.
The great thing about the type of college you already seem to prefer, is that there are so many good ones out there, and large urban schools generally have a large selection of majors. So, over the next year you can look at different schools, and get a basic idea as to what you are looking for in a college, but don’t get fixated on any specific colleges as yet.
Remember again - high school should be your primary focus for now.
