This is my first post so I am not sure if this is the right place to post this or not

I recently got my results back from the ACT and I cannot determine which test score I should submit to colleges (or if I should submit both.) I am planning to apply as a finance or economics major (depending on the school)

My SAT score was 2240 combined (770 M, 760 CR, 710 W and 9 on the essay)
My ACT score was a 34 composite (32 E, 34 R, 34 M, 34 S, 29 on the Writing/English and 8 on the essay)

I was also wondering if the test I should submit would be different if the college only strongly considers the Math and Critical Reading part of the SAT.

Your scores are virtually identical, but I would submit the SAT (or both sets of scores and let colleges decide which one they want to use), as your 29 ACT writing is out-of-sync with the rest of your ACT scores, as well as your SAT (W) score.

Ok thanks. Do either of you think it makes sense to retake either test to improve my writing score? I know both writing scores are on the lower side.

Thanks EllieMom. My ACT writing essay score was 8/12 but when scaled with my ACT English score of 32 it turns into a 29 (that is how I got the the 5th score.)

@metsfan27 I’ve got to ask because my daughter’s scores are very similar, including the outlying essay score. Do you have hard-to-read handwriting? We’re trying to figure out why her writing scores tend to skew so much lower. That was one of our hypotheses.

@EllieMom I don’t believe I have hard-to-read handwriting but it may be that I am just used to reading my own writing. I have also been wondering about why my essay scores have been so low as well.

Thanks, @metsfan27. And don’t get me wrong…the essay scores are fine. They are only low in the context of your other scores, which are extremely high.

@EllieMom Thanks! Congratulations to your daughter on her score as well. I just hope colleges weigh the writing score less than the other sections because of the of the subjectivity involved and the fact that the SAT is also changing the writing part.
