Which States Have The Best Public College System?

I know California is probably going to be #1 for the majority of people.

But which states have the best public higher education system from the top to the bottom (not including community colleges)

California
-UC’s (Berkeley, Davis, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz)
-CSU’s (Stanislaus, Long Beach etc…)
-many other state colleges

New York
-SUNY’s (Binghamton, Geneseo, Purchase, Stony Brok, Albany, Buffalo etc…)
-CUNY’s (Baruch, Brooklyn, Hunter, Queens etc…)

Virginia
-University Of Virginia
-College Of William & Mary
-Virginia Tech
-James Madison
-George Mason
-Mary Washington

The UCs have six schools ranked in the USNews top 50 universities. No other public school system has more than one.

Are we doing this per capita? If so I’d say it went to Virginia.

we’re doing this however you want to do it :)

I guess another thing to consider is population size. The UC’s have six schools ranked in the top 50 and Washington only has one. However, California has six times as many people as Washington so I guess maybe Washington should get just as much credit? haha I dunno

I think California has more than 30 public universities.

I’d say California and Virginia. CA for the worldwide prestige and big-school experience; Virginia offers a great choice between mid-sized university and smaller almost-LAC. Both also have decent second-tier schools.

The top three would be California, Virginia and New York.

If you analyze based on per capita or population, you are asking a different question. Instead of asking which state has the best public higher education system (your original question), you are asking what is the tiniest state that has managed to put together one decent public university. In which case my answer would be some state like say Vermont. The Univ. of Vermont is a good school of solid reputation, and the state has only about 600,000 people.

Delaware is probably a better answer than Vermont

mmm, very true!

The UNC system is comprised of sixteen campuses. There are good choices for just about every type of student and the COA is lower than many other state systems.
