Which test scores to send???

I’m hoping that the great minds on this board can help with this situation! I’d ask at school, but am not as confident that they will have the best answer!

My son is a rising senior and my 4th child to apply to college etc. His highest ACT score is a 31, but has a writing score of 19! He also has an ACT score of 30 with no writing score, as he didn’t take it that time. I am wondering if we should have his test re-scored? ( I have heard that you can do this…anyone try that?) He is not the best writer, so it’s not like I thought he would score high, but a 19 seems very low! All this said, for schools that don’t require writing, should we just send the 30 ACT? Or go ahead and send the 31 with the low writing and hope they don’t notice or care of it? There are not too many schools that he is interesting in, that require the writing score, but a couple do… He won’t take it again. We are done with testing! ha ha~!

  1. Generally, colleges that do not require the writing do not use it at all so send the 31 or send both (a number of colleges superscore ACT tests, using highest section scores from multiple tests).
  2. Cannot advise one way or the other as to whether to rescore, but be aware ACT, without specifically saying so, has already conceded its scoring of the writing test is a disaster. There have been several reports of scores being changed significantly on a rescore and now ACT has announced it is abandoning the scoring method it began with last September's test that scored the writing section on a 36 scale, and it is returning to the 2 to 12 scale it used before then.
