Which top schools are need-blind to internationals?

I will be needing financial aid, and I am a canadian student with a Chinese passport...I am aiming for the ivies and some other schools like UC Berkely, UofChicago, and NYU. So I'm wondering which ones will be the easiest to get in and still get financial aid? I also heard that some of the ivies are need-blind for international students..IS THAT TRUE? I also want to know how much it will hurt me if I apply for financial aid? The ivies I'm looking at are wharton, columbia, yale and princeton. THANKS VERY MUCH.

It’s unlikely you would get the aid you need from UCB or NYU. NYU is horrible with aid, and UCB can really only help some of its own instate students.

If you need aid…then you need schools that are need-blind **AND **meet need. Most schools are “need blind” but they don’t give much aid. So, what’s the point of getting accepted without any aid?

Thanks mom2collegekids, that is what I was thinking too. But I’m not very familiar with the financial aid process so I want to know which schools are need-blind AND meet need? And How much will this hurt me?? Since I heard no school are need-blind for internationals? I might consider more safety schools if this lowers my chance by a lot…

bump…

I’m not sure which schools are need-blind and meet 100% of need for int’ls…

I think Amhearst, Princeton, and Harvard are…

Maybe Williams?

Hopefully those who know a lot about int’l admissions can chime in here.

Since I heard no school are need-blind for internationals? I might consider more safety schools if this lowers my chance by a lot…

There are some…hopefully those who know will post some…

AS for safeties. Those need to be VERY carefully chosen since most safeties don’t meet need for anyone…especially int’ls. So, you need to find ones that will give big merit scholarships to int’ls for their stats. Merit scholarships are not considered to be “financial aid.”

Williams changed its FA policy a couple months ago. It is no longer need blind to international applicants. The lesson here is that even if a school is currently need blind to internationals, it may not be by the time you are accepted. FA is in short supply everywhere.

^
Yes, I agree with the above post. Williams is no longer need blind to internationals; as a matter of fact, most schools are very short on aid so you would be severely disadvantaged if you apply for aid as an international student. I suggest you to look into schools that give merit scholarships to international students. Mount Holyoke, City Colleges of New York come into mind. I would say that schools that are completely need blind and need based towards internationals are Harvard, Yale, Princeton, the three schools with the biggest endowments in the country. Dartmouth and MIT say that they are also need blind, but I’m not too sure—I heard somewhere that MIT will be ending their generous FA policy soon due to the economic crisis.

Hope that helps! If you have a Canadian citizenship/green card, you might be able to get some aid from the ivies, namely Columbia and Cornell.

Finally, I should also add that as far as my knowledge goes, the schools that I mentioned in my post are probably the ONLY schools in the entire country that would consider giving aid to internationals. Also bear in mind that if you’re applying to state schools, you’ll be paying the OOS tuition.
