Hello I was wondering if anyone could help me make a decision on which college would be the best for what I want to study!
So I want I want to double major in sociology with an emphasis in business and communication.
I am between:
UCB: Sociology/ Media studies
UCLA: Pre sociology/ Commutation (Hard to get into once in college)
UCSD: sociology and economy/ communication
UCD: organizational sociology/ communication
I really want to go to the school that will best suite my long term goals which is to open a non profit or be in business related field that deals with people.
Berkley was my first choice but I heard a lot of negatives about their media studies program and the atmosphere for transfers.
Please any comments with any knowledge on the programs these schools offers will help so much!
UCLA: If the plan is to enter under Sociology, which would be necessary as it cannot be added after transfer, and then be approved for a double major in Communications then you can scratch that plan right now. Hard is an understatement. Net to impossible is more like it.
UCB: Perfectly doable. You will, however, want to apply under Media Studies if you want to be confident that your double major application will be approved. Media Studies is highly competitive and capped. Sociology is neither at Cal.
UCSD and UCD are both fine with those plans. It does not matter which major you apply under as neither are impacted at those universities.
Side Note: If you want my personal advice, sociology and communications/media are rather similar. Not in terms of content from a academic standpoint, but it terms of what those studies would add to your future career. Communication and media analysis is a very big part of sociology. It would be the equivalence of studying sociology and ethnic studies, in that a good sociology program should cover a wide range of ethnic studies by itself.
I would spend some time thinking about the issues in society you are passionate about in order to determine what type of non-profit work or business organizations interest you most. Maybe it is health. Maybe it is economy. Maybe it is ethnic relations, which could lead you to pick up a foreign language. Find a major that brings something entirely different and unique to your sociology degree.
