I was wondering if someone could give me a list of universities that would be good places to do a phD in maths. I'm thinking of MIT, Harvard, Cambridge - advise on other uni-s which are generally considered on par with these would be apreciated.

Berkeley
Princeton
Stanford

chicago (10 chars)

Princeton (leading)

Berkeley
Harvard
MIT
Stanford (grouped -- tied)

Chicago (close third)

Yale (close fourth)

etc.

At these levels, I am sure it comes down to specialty.

U.S. News: Best Graduate Math Programs (2008) : The Consus Group Rankings

take U.S. news with a grain of salt. I can tell you that among the math academics, it goes like this:

Princeton

Harvard
MIT
Berkeley
Chicago

Yale
Stanford

Thanks.

Generally, on what basis do academics/news regard Princeton as being slightly superior to MIT/Harvard etc? I know this is a forum generally for discussing US unis (I've never seen a mention of Cambridge before), but how does Cambridge compare to the highly regarded uni-s?

The last time the National Research Council ranked different US programs -- admittedly a long time ago -- these were the rankings. You can google the National Reseach Council and find out their criteria and also perhaps get a glimpse of their new rankings.
