which universities have the best art programs?

I don’t want to go to an art school, but i am wanting to double major in art history and studio art. I am not really opposed to any areas of the country except maybe the deep south and middle of the country. Its not an absolute requirement, but schools that offer a gap year would be great too.

These schools would be well-suited to your interests and represent a substantial selectivity range:

Williams
Hamilton
Vassar
Scripps
Smith
Kenyon
Lewis & Clark
Bard
Sarah Lawrence
Skidmore
Wheaton (MA)
Willamette
Hollins

Most schools allow you to take time off before attending.

Vassar’s studio art program is so-so. Could be better. But the art history is really great.

Look also at
Syracuse;
Carnegie mellon (which has interesting combined programs between studio art and other disciplines);
U of cincinnati has great design program;
RIT;
Hampshire has great digital art plus the 5-college consortium;
Bennington;
U of Delaware has a great fine arts program;
NYU
Centre has a unique program in studio art

Good suggestions above. Not so sure how good the art history is there but WashU has an art school and flexibility to cross register. RISD/Brown is an incredible program but a tough admit

Might be helpful if you state your stats so people can recommend schools that are appropriate for you. What are your financial considerations?Are you male or female? Do you have a preference on size?

I would consider VCUARTS the arts school is one of the most highly rated in the country. The overall VCU will offer the full university experience but since youre interested in art history and studio art most of your classes would be associated with the outstanding Art school. Also give serious consideration to UCLA , similar in that the art school is just as highly regarded as VCU and the greater UCLA is very good school. Good luck.

Tufts also has a combined museum program.

Irnos you have good stats, i highly doubt you will even look at the programs, but Edinboro university in PA has a new extremely well known studio art program and my brother is in it now.
