Just noticed this problem today - anyone else? On both my phone and laptop.
I see that there are new comments on a post, I click on them to read them, but they still show as unread.
Yes, happening to me, too. It started earlier this evening – wasn’t happening this afternoon. It happens in both Chrome and Firefox on my laptop. Hope it gets fixed!
This has been happening on my phone all evening too.
It’s been glitching all day. My notifications don’t go away either even after I’ve clicked on them. Plus, it’s taking me to the last post rather than the “last read” post or whatever it normally does.
@Madison85 - thanks for posting about this. I swore at my phone several times today thinking it was the cause (it’s old and glitchy). I noticed it this morning and it’s still happening at 9:45 PST…
Vanilla Forums released some updates yesterday morning, and sometimes we see unintended issues arise. I’m filling in for our community manager (Sorin) this week, but I’ll communicate this to others on our team. Sorry for the annoyances!
If you view a post and then use the back button you will likely see the post is still unread (which is actually how most sites work since the page is not reloading). However, if you are using the site navigation to view other forums or threads you should be seeing those posts marked as unread.
My question would then be…are you still seeing these posts marked as unread after you’ve visited a few pages? Or are you indeed using the back button after viewing those posts? Hope that makes sense!
When I use the back button, the posts are still marked as unread. If I force a reload of that page, it does now show those posts as read. Of course I much prefer it to update even when just using the back button.

Refresh temporarily clears the unread flag for me, too.
Don’t know how to answer your question. I don’t purposely jump forums but use Bookmarks and Latest. I did just read GM’s post, then go back and read a post in a different forum…and GM’s is still marked unread.
Okay, thanks for the input. The vendor made an update that doesn’t force a page re-load when the back button is used (this is actually proper behavior and cuts back on server load, though traditionally they have been forcing page reload in that situation). So, hitting back will not mark as read, though I am not sure why yours isn’t updating, LF. You’re going to other links on the site and still seeing them unread when you come back?
Yes. And seeing, eg, on one thread, the last post as 1:17 when there were three after that, as late as 1:40. And going back n forth between this post and another forum, you’re still marked the last post and unread.

Can one of you who uses Chrome either clear the browser cache, or launch an incognito browser window and try this again? For the latter, you’d click the setting menu in the top right of the Chrome browser (three horizontal lines) and select “New Incognito Window”. Then, log in and see if posts are still marked as unread after you navigate a few links and come back. This issue still seems rather random, as some of you do seem to be getting the correct marked as read, while others are not.
I am trying the incognito window on my cell and despite reading in this, the FA, and the parents forums and going back and forth, no change. On the laptop, some changed, but not the most recently read (read for the first time.)
I don’t recall this issue on non CC forums. Maybe because the “new” isn’t flagged. (And for me, the posts are threaded differently.) So I dunno.
@Lenitus, I logged in on a “New Incognito Window” and went to the Financial Aid & Scholarships forum. The posts are marked unread if I use my back button, but if I click on “Financial Aid & Scholarships,” then it is marked as read. However, when I do that, it takes me back to page 1 of the financial aid forum. If I hadn’t noted that I was on page 5, I would have had to scroll through each page to see where I had left off.
Thanks for the additional feedback and for trying this out! I will pass it on to the vendor.
Any update on this? I’m still getting notifications that I have new messages or notifications even though they’ve been read. I go to one page and the notifications appear. Click somewhere else and they disappear. Click another link (not back) and they reappear. Rinse and repeat.
I am also hoping this will get fixed so I can use the back button on my android phone and not refresh.

*I double-checked the functionality here myself by browsing the College Confidential forum and this is what we would expect given the latest code push. As I mentioned, we’re not happy with the user experience on this and want to get this fixed up for the next release. We may have a fix available prior to your next official release (sometime in February – and yes, minding March Madness dates!)
So, to the best of my knowledge, nothing here is amiss – this is a result of our removing the forced page refresh upon hitting the back button. Again, we hope to have this fixed soon, but no later than the February release.*
