White House Internship

correspondence, communications have conducted interviews.

I don’t usually post in these types of blogs but I just wanted to keep you guys updated.

I turned in my application late December, received a vitals e-mail February 8th, and just had my phone interview today (I was contacted last week on Friday).

Good luck everyone!

Also, I just wanted to point out that there is nothing to be nervous about when you get the phone interview. It’s more of an informational phone conversation about what you would do if you were chosen to be an intern more than an interrogation of your abilities as an intern.

I believe her and if you don’t it doesn’t change anything. Like someone mentioned before, your sitting pretty if you received the vitals email, even if you have not had an interview- AS OF THIS WEEK. If not there is always next year.

well I spoke to somebody at the office today. Nice guy. Sounded pretty young. Anyways… he said not receiving a vitals doesn’t have to mean you’ve been eliminated. But, when I suggested that perhaps I should resubmit the application for Fall, he was clearly more comfortable with saying yes to that than saying I was still in the running for summer. I even asked if the vitals were for BR checks (pushing it, I know) and he said he couldn’t tell me haha. Poor guy having to deal with all of us crazies. Anyway here is an email response I got for the same question I asked the guy in the office (Pretty much, what is the importance of the vitals email/should students who didn’t receive one beging thinking about resubmitting the app).

Notifications for the Summer 2011 Internship Class began on February 21, 2011. Applicants are being notified on a rolling basis. Please follow this link to learn more: [Selection Process & Calendar | The White House](http://www.whitehouse.gov/about/internships/selection).

Thank you, we look forward to reviewing your application materials.

Sincerely,
The White House Internship Team

Very generic. I tried submitting my app for the Fall, but their system is bugging out and won’t recognize the uploaded docs. Hopefully they fix it over the next few days before the deadline passes.

I have recieved the vital email but nothing else. I am aware that the rest of the departments are still reviewing applications and will take a few more days to respond! Patience is virtue :)

@ convig when you say you talked to someone in the office was it through email or on the phone? Was he able to give you a more specific time frame than on a rolling basis?

On the phone and no he was not. Not his fault though! As has been discussed to death on here, it seems that this stage of the process lies in the hands of individual departments, who do things at their own pace. There exists no solid guideline for us to compare against.

Where did you find the phone number? All I see is an email address.

call the whitehouse switchboard!

I was hoping people would begin to divulge which offices they applied to. My top choices were similar to yours: Office of the First Lady, Public Engagement,Domestic Policy,OMA, and I think Political Affairs. I can’t remember what order I put them in because I know I would be happy with any of these offices. I know I probably did not select any placement with the word “Presidential” or Chief of Staff, cause I wanted to focus on direct community and public service type offices.

I’m hoping my top picks have not finished their interviews yet.

Maybe, others would like to share their top 5 picks, but I would caution against giving exact order because it may identify you (although I have no idea who could actually remember at this point if they didn’t record it).

I just noticed this article and I was wondering if and how this would affect our chances this year:

[Intern for the US president - GlobalTimes](http://www.globaltimes.cn/www/english/sci-edu/china/2011-02/625463.html)

I’m operating under the assumption that they will take up slots and not be treated separately of course.

It shouldn’t affect the current Summer 2011 Internship program because that specific program is only one month and it starts in July, Not May 31.

Otherwise, I think its another good way for the U.S. to make nice with China :-D.

@liberalspirit: how do you know other departments are still reviewing apps?

Because the departments never release their interns all at once. Its a day by day process and all our independent of when they want to contact the potential interns. hence on a ‘rolling basis’ as they say on their website  Have hope everyone, nothing is final until that rejection letter makes our hearts tear lol

Well put liberal!! I’m still holding on to hope.

has anyone applied to the fall internship yet? any suggestions on what to write the policy memo on? please HELP!!I’ve never had to do a policy memo or a memo ever.

Suzie, you’re pretty much writing a memo to a senior staffer in the department that your most interested/in an area you know really well regarding the current administration and the job that they are doing. You can also offer strategic suggestions of how you think they can improve that area or anything else you’d like that staffer to know about the department, like what you think they did well or agree with, etc. It’s a chance to show the WH what you know and the types of ideas you might be able to construct. It’s pretty much showing the office you know what your talking about, and wont be a deer in headlights should they select you. They want to see you can hold your own, I feel like it’s a way to weed out those who are unqualified.

Memos tend to be a little less on the formal side as far as the jargon, but it’s a fine line, so be vary careful with your wording. There is no one specific format, but most look like:

THE WHITE HOUSE
(Some are dated here)

“MEMORANDUM” (some times names are put in here like " MEMORANDUM FOR… REGARDING"), if not then under that,
TO: (the staffer),
FROM: (your name)
SUBJECT:
then a brief intro of what your discussing, then a few short paragraphs where you state your suggestions, comments, concerns, strategy, etc. and a brief conclusion.

If you live near a presidential library, I would suggest taking a trip there and asking an archivist to help you find some policy memos from the office your going to write to for reference. You can find some online as well, but actually going to a presidential library, finding an original and making a copy might be more inspirational! But the format changes from memo to memo, so do what you think feels right =) Hope that helps.

this forum has gotten really, really quiet all of a sudden. i’m sure it’s because we’re all to nervous to post anything…rejections for last summer went out the wednesday of the “notification week”…we all made it past humpday
(yes I know it’s “rolling notifications”, but I’m just trying to get the conversation restarted…this forum needs to become active again!)

I was wondering if anyone knew when rejections went out last year. Thanks for sharing
