Whittling down the list of colleges...the Safety School

KatMT–just saw Book of Mormon here in Austin and noticed (since I now obsessively read the Who’s Who in the Cast) there are 2 JMU alums in the show. Congrats!

Thanks austinmt. They are both from before my time at JMU, so I don’t know them well. Mormon has been good to JMU alums. We also have a more recent grad… 2010… in the Chicago company.

Does anyone have any experience with good safety choices in the south?

I do not believe an audition is required for admission at Christopher Newport or Emory & Henry in VA, although both do have auditions for scholarship consideration.

So for a student with academic stats above their admissions requirements, these could be safeties.

e95mum - You often hear not to consider a BA at a school that also offers a BFA. But I believe you could consider the BA Dramatic Arts at Coastal Carolina University as a “safety” program. The BA does not require an audition, but does require an interview. The BAs are well integrated into the program. There is more flexibility in the curriculum for the BAs.

Thanks KatMT, I will definitely look into those!

@abigailmorris. If UVM doesn’t offer MT (does any state school in VT?), would you be eligible for a reduced (near in state) tuition at UNH or Plymouth State through that regional exchange that exists with several of the New England states? http://www.nebhe.org/programs-overview/rsp-tuition-break/overview/

Plymouth is definitely rural but a very pretty area and they do have a strong program as KatMT attested. UNH on the other hand is sort of rural with an out. For starters, it’s a large school with all of the trimmings, sporting events etc. so the community takes on its own busy feel. There is easy access through the Coast bus to places like Portsmouth, NH where there are many restaurants, theatres etc. But the biggest “anti-rural” inoculator is its access to Boston. It’s an hour by train and the train literally comes right to campus. Get on/off within walking distance to your dorm. Not just nearby but how do I get to the train station close. So you could hop on, go to a Red Sox game and come home on the same day.

Worth a look anyway. Their MT program is a good one. My son is applying to UNH but not for theatre. We toured it this past February and were very impressed by the campus. I get the “don’t want it to be too rural” concern completely. My son is a city kid from the west coast and he has that same fear but UNH was OK to him for the reasons I mentioned above.

UNH has implemented auditions for its BA in Theatre/MT Concentration this year, taking it out of the safety school realm. Since this is the first year, there is no way to know what their acceptance rate will be.

There is one state school in VT that does offer a BA in MT, so I guess I wouldn’t qualify. And UNH is auditioned now? Just when you guys were making it sound awesome!

How about South Dakota State University? You do have to audition to get in, but they go to several festivals and alternate audition sites during the year. Other than that they are in Vermillion, South Dakota, they have a wonder up an coming MT BFA program. They do a senior showcase in New York now, and they can get you work in the Black Hills in the summertime. The campus has 11,000 students, so there is always an audience and plenty to do.
