Who actually wants to go to UCSB?

@allfieldsarereq
I think everything you said was totally fine. I’ve personally complained about UCSC on here loads of times. I appreciate your input. I still would like to transfer to UCSB though. I have heard about the party school reputation-how much do you think that affects one’s chance of getting into a good grad school?

When 2013 transfer look at our old post, they will see allfieldsarereq posts!! :D

I don’t go to UCSB, so take this message if you want. Honestly, not every UC is for everyone. Some people are going to find UCSB as a good fit and some will not. However, you should really figure if its a right fit for you on your own. I have an internship right now and my boss is a UCSB graduate and he has said the comments of “huge party school” die down in the future. As a UCSB student he was able to land internships in big companies like the Big 4 Accounting firm, Oracle, and other places. Once you gain experience from internships and other stuff, you will gain people’s respect and people will stop making comments of it. I have friends back in high school who trash-talked UCSB when we were seniors in high school and now are applying to transfer there for the UC application -- and some TAGed there <<. Besides if you choose to go to UCSB, you’re not going to get these stupid comments while you are in UCSB and locals there won’t make these dumb comments.

BTW if the people who make these jokes go to schools that are lower ranked and notes prestigious, wouldn’t you just assume they’re jealous they didn’t get in o__O.

@AllFields testify sista. People don’t realize how crushing it is to have all of your achievements swept aside in lieu of party stereotypes.

@poserbruin and other people who think I’m just a negative nancy: I cannot overstate the massive shadow the party image casts over UCSB. Nobody is doubting that UCSB is a world-class institution filled with exciting classes and field-leading professors. The problem lies in that nobody in the public cares about how good the school is: they KNOW it is a party school, and that’s all that matters.

The weird thing is that I’m not a lame-ass that is socially awkward or is against partying. I’m just a normal person who puts their education before some sort of nebulous “college experience”.

If anything I said in this post resonates with you, seriously reconsider attending UCSB. It really isn’t for everyone.

Who care what other people think. The same people that say “oh a party school” are the same people who prob didn’t get in. If you think transferring from a school is going to stop you from being around inept people you are very mistaken. I hope that transferring helps you with the respect you want to gain from people who don’t know you. Take pride in wherever you go and if someone says some snide comment about where you go to school grow a pair and set them straight.

It’s the school I sent a TAG too, so it’s my most likely backup if Berkeley and UCLA reject me. I liked the town far better than Irvine or Davis, honestly, and I don’t think the party school stereotype will bother me. I’d probably go visit again before deciding if it is down to backups, but honestly, if I go to UCSB I’ll be there for an education, and I’ll get one from a great school. I’m not going there to talk to people who don’t take UCSB seriously because of a stereotype blown out of proportion. It’s a fantastic school, and graduate schools will know that.

and a lot of people are transferring from CC’s. You think we haven’t dealt with more derogatory stereotypes then “its a party school”. Try spending 2 years when your taking classes and everybody thinks that its easy because its a CC. Try hearing that sound of disappointment when you tell someone you’re in school and they ask you where and its a CC. Then talk to me about being stereotyped.

woah man, you people get so defensive. For not going to UCSB, you all seem to have really strong opinions on what it is like to go to UCSB. I’m merely offering an opinion, sorry you vehemently disagree with it for whatever reason

The UC Berkeley board is full of students who say everyone is miserable and hate it there, when we all know that is not true.

You can’t go wrong with any UC, they are all great schools.

A high school student just got accepted to SB with a 3.2 gpa and a low SAT score–after they appealed.

Interesting…

Its not specifically UCSB. I think certain schools fit certain people for various reasons. I just don’t like when people say they want to transfer because they’re tired of being refereed to as a party school. Thats just a frivolous thing to base your choice on. The sad fact is you don’t know whats right for u until you actually go through it. Im sure you have a lot of legitimate well thought out reasons for why you no longer want to be there.

SDSU known as a huge party school. 69000 applied, 7600 got in. Im one of the 7600. i’ll be damned if somebody tell me that my achievements in CC are worthless. Especially someone who prob applied and didn’t get in (not referring to anyone on the boards).Thats all im pointing out.

@lwlking where did you hear that someone got in already? i thought decisions weren’t coming out til monday the 19th

I think this sums it up best. It’s not so much “boo-hoo, stop making fun of my school”. Usually when people say to not care about what others think, it is usually referring to negative comments. But who ignores praise?
I, like I am sure is the same with mmsiphone, was a good student in high school. Call me whatever name you like. I don’t care. Because it is not that I take problem with the negative strangers automatically attribute to me. Rather, I take a problem with the positive they strip away and ignore. I achieved. I want that to be honored.

I am not saying that it is such a huge deal. As I have said before, I have multiple reasons for wanting to transfer. This is just one part of it and I just wanted to clarify.

I get this from adults. It has nothing to do with whether or not they applied to the school. They’re not saying it because they’re jealous. They say it because that is what they hear and mostly what they know. I don’t care what kids say.

Of course not

I feel like this is not a problem provided that I am content with the school. If I loved it here at UCSB then I wouldn’t let others deter me.
I have went that route. I defended UCSB and brought up all the good things about the school. What did that get me? I am still unhappy.

I think this conversation has focused too much on the party school reputation which was not my intention at all. This is not the deal breaker for me but is only ONE of a series of reasons of why I want to leave.

This is all I am trying to point out. I am not bashing UCSB by any means.

Obviously I made the decision to come here even though I knew about the reputation. I agree- it’s a small thing.

So I came here to see what it was all about. I don’t like it for a variety of reasons. UCSB does not fit me and that is okay. End of story.

I gave it a chance, had an open mind, and this is all that matters. I know I am choosing to transfer for the right reasons.

@Mikali its in one of the posts over at the UCSC college confidential forum, a poster posted it. I’m assuming they are talking about the previous year.

@allfields i know how it feels when you want to be out of a situation that just isn’t right for you. I hope we all get what we want. I think we are all just ready for the process to be over. I can’t wait until next year when we can come back to these boards and help people in our same spot. Thank for the info. Always appreciated

Yeah I know, right?

And thanks :)

It would be an honor and a privilege to attend this University.

Meh UCSB… to far from my house, plus my parents would kill me if i went there loool

Plus AllFieldsAreReq put my heart off the school, JKKK party school reputation kept me away prolly last choice

UCSB is my 3rd choice behind UCB and UCLA. And if I do get into UCB or UCLA I only wish for it to have a similar atmosphere to UCSB. This is one of the schools my parents really would like me to go to if I can’t get into UCB or UCLA, I wonder if they know about its reputation? I’m sure as hell not gonna tell them.

In the UCSB housing thread someone made there were a few YouTube videos posted about IV and the school in general and I guess some people are disgusted by them but when I watch them they just make me want to go there more.

Do people not like having fun or something?

False. UCSB is not the best bang for the buck. UCLA and Cal are your best bang for the buck. You’re paying the same amount but are getting a more prestigious degree.
Also, UCLA’s accounting program is A LOT better than UCSB’s.
