Are the dorm assignments completely random?

or do you /can you specify your interests, etc. and get paired with a “compatible” person?

It's done alphabetically during Basic, and then (generally) your squad will pick who your roommate is during the academic year. They usually try to pair you with someone you will be at least somewhat compatible with (unless you're stubborn, in which case they might put you in a "trouble-makers" room). It depends on the squad though. That's how mine does it for freshmen year.

My squad last year (and for the 4 digs this year) got to choose their own room mates.

For us it was alphabetical during BCT (standard procedure). Our squadron assigned roommates for first semester. For second semester, we weren't sure whether they would let us pick our own roommates or not, so we decided to be proactive. We made up a list of who would like to room with whom and passed it on to our squad leadership. I'm still not sure whether or not they were originally going to let us choose, but they did approve our list. :)

we got to choose after basic, and then had to change at least one roomate for 2nd semester

During Basic, it's alphabetical unless you have a last name that cadre would think would be hilarious to pair up with someone else's last name (nameplates go outside your door). For example...Executioners B Flight had "Small" and "Wang." They thought it would be amusing. And the thirty or so freshman you go through basic with will be the ones you spend the academic year with so you choose among them.

Do they ever pair athletes from the same sport together? For instance, might two football players room together? they'd have the same practice schedule/travel time/etc? Or maybe band members together?

How about after the 4dig year?

We have (had, actually) two four-degree basketball ICs in my squad who were roommates last semester, and it worked out really well for them. (I say "had" because one of them Form 34'd :()

I've never been able to choose my roomates, ever. It will depend on your squad. In fact, they asked us to send in who we wanted to room with last semester, and made sure no one roomed with who they wanted to. So you just want to pray and get lucky with you're squad staff and AOC/AMT.

The Cadet Sight Picture says you're not supposed to put IC's of the same sport together unless there isn't a viable alternitive. It depends on the squad though.

Tim, what squad are you in? That's messed up.

I think he's in 15, is that correct?

yea, mighty war eagles.

haha. Chiller Cobras! right down the hall from 15. i'm down there quite often visiting GroogWaugh

Just remember that there's always that one person (usually a guy and a girl) in each squad that no one wants to room with. Most squads are pretty good about letting you choose your roommate after basic, but keep in mind, you may not always get who you want. If you get the ****bag as a roommate, use it as an opportunity to set an example and encourage them to be better. Or encourage them to outprocess. :) My first semester roommate did. haha

your first semester roomate encouraged you to outprocess b/c you were a ****bag? i don't think i'd share that on here ;)

oh, and nice auto-scensor by CC again on u redhead... lol

haha! What I meant is that I encouraged my first semester roommate to outprocess... she didn't like it here and hence she wasn't doing well but she didn't want to disappoint her family. Not a good reason to stay.

During your time as a cadet, you'll likely have terrible and awesome roommates. It's all part of the experience. The geat thing about starting off with a bad one is that you appreciate the better ones that much more!

And sometimes, you'll think your roomate(s) is terrible, and by the end of the semester, you'll look back and realize it wasn't as bad as you thought.

Example: I didn't get along with one of my roomates at all at the beginning of last semester. He has a type A personality, which made things difficult. By the end of the semester though, I got along better with him than anyone else in my squad.

And other times, your roommate really is as bad as you think ;)
