Sent it in last week. :D

Referring that list above:
Duke and Cornell are definitely not better than Stanford, and Princeton definitely upstages UChicago. USNews’s rankings seem more accurate.

nah, USNews is really biased; they have no peer review, so who knows what the heck they’re doing

I like these global measurements
[TOP - 100 (Global universities ranking)](http://www.globaluniversitiesranking.org/images/banners/top-100(eng).pdf)
[Academic Ranking of World Universities](<a href=“Academic Ranking of World Universities - Wikipedia”>Academic Ranking of World Universities - Wikipedia)

For the first one, I love that MIT on the top–but how does the University of Illinois upstage Berkeley, Penn, and Duke? o__O’’
The second one could be more accurate, though.

I like how the first one doesn’t have Yale.

who cares about rankings, after a certain point its about personal preference, maybe u dont like the cold so u go to stanford, maybe u like the residential system so u go to rice or yale, maybe u had a dream when u were in 7th grade of going to MIT, so go there…
U chicago is for quirky people , maybe you shd go there, coz u worked really hard on their ■■■■■■■■ “mustard” essay/

i strongly believe that rankings are not really helpful comparing within the top 30 unis, they help only for specific subdivisions, like for chem eng, U of wisconsin madison , or U of minnesota are superb schools but not many people know tht. so rankings help only in the specific departments.

Some people do take rankings seriously. That’s why some are enchanted by Harvard’s (or replace with some other Ivy) prestige and are applying because of it. That said, applying only for the prestige is wrong, because one should go to college for himself and not for others.
Rankings do have value, though. While all schools above a certain threshold are fairly close in terms of academics, Princeton, for example, is generally stronger in academics than Cornell or Dartmouth is.

Agreed. Rankings can give some people a good idea about which universities are good for certain subjects. That being said, you shouldn’t just apply to Princeton because of the prestige factor. There are lots of good reasons to like the university for what it is, and if you only apply based on how it ranks then that just shows your lack of character. And if you just like Princeton because of its ranking, then chances are that your application will look weaker than that of someone who actually has a passion for Princeton.

Anyways, the rankings table that was posted a bit earlier is based on each university as a whole (undergraduate + graduate standards). Some universities are better for undergrad than grad, so that can explain some of the difference between Princeton and other universities. Also, some universities are really good in one subject but weak in others. For instance, Johns Hopkins is amazing at medicine but not so great in other fields. But because of its reputation with medicine, it gets pushed above Stanford in the rankings. Princeton, on the other hand, is pretty good all around.

And for people who still really care about rankings, Princeton has actually moved back up again to 8 (I think it’s only behind U Chicago because of Chicago’s strong Econ program):
