Who believes the essay should be removed from the SAT?

But wait...if it's a decision between essay or analogies, I'd take the essay. And the same goes for vocabulary...I'd prefer we get rid of it and just have the essay.

There's ways to study for analogies and vocabs though. And it's hard to learn to write well.

well i always did well on analogies and essays, but on vocab it always seems that 2 per section are a shot in the dark. I just usually guess well.

I think the serious essay writing should be left to the AP English tests. It gives you much more time, as well as more opportunites to craft an essay indicative of your ability.

Are you people serious? None of the standardized tests give "sufficient writing time". Essays are not gonna be perfect when you write them by yourself under timed conditions, nor should they be; if you got unlimited time and help to write an essay, where's the natural ability? If you can't think on your feet on a national test, how are you going to fare in the real world?

I agree! It isn't like the time limit on the other sections is enough to really think about what you're doing; the essay is fair, trust me. When you get a like 10-12...it really doesn't effect your score. It's the MC that really hurts you.

I agree. And you all should stop the moaning--it ain't doing jack.

I think they should remove the essay from the SAT, because there are too many outside factors beyond reasoning and writing skills that affect the test, and as a result people's scores.

I answered 2 questions wrong on my multiple choice on the June SAT, and got a 6 on my essay. Why? Because I am slow at handwriting, and like to take time to think about what I'm saying so it is something meaningful. I used only one example, and didn't get past 3/4 of a page. I am not a bad writer...last year in Honors English, I got A's on all of my essay except one. That includes in class essays where we had an hour to write. In addition, my school does not practice grade inflation; my friends in the class were getting worse grades than me, but receiving scores higher than mine on the SAT's essay because they are great at writing quick, meaningless glock.

I'm not a natural BSer when it comes to writing essays...and that's pretty much what the essay portion is testing: how good people are at writing some crap down quickly that sounds and/or looks nice. No evidence has yet been presented to suggest otherwise...

And there is plenty of time to think about what you are doing in all of the other sections...you have about 1 minute per question there, except for the writing multiple choice.

I am going to spend this summer trying to learn to handwrite quickly. Hopefully that will get me somewhere by October...

The essay proves that you're not a mindless, answer-bubbling drone who can't actually think unless given multiple choice questions.

Unless you are, in which case it won't..

They should really get rid of the whole test, not just the essay or the analogies or the grid ins...
