I feel like I should create a thread for every one who doesn't go to a fancy, competitive school with an IB program and a valedictorian who automatically gets into Harvard. Whenever I talk about NYS regents exams on this website every one's like "wow they're just a joke, I got 99 or 100 on all of them" and then I fell like an idiot for worrying about them like every one else at my school does. So, who else on CC goes to a non-competitive, status quo high school where unless you're going to your local state school no one has heard of your college? there must be others on this website, i know it...

Nope, it's just you.

j/k
:p

hah, dont fret, pal. my high school is pretty crappy. i mean, we have a couple AP courses, but in terms of the student body, they are mediocre at best. over half our class doesnt go to college or goes to a community college, and like 1 person every 5 years goes to an ivy league/ivy league level school.

thanks richard, I don't feel like such an odd man out any more. It sounded like you were describing my school, we had a guy go to cornell four years ago and that was about it, hoping I'll get to change that though...

We haven't had a person get to an Ivy League school in several years also.

This year I got into Princeton, one of my friends got into Cornell, and yet another friend has a good shot at Dartmouth.

We must be an anomalous class.

although we're kinda in the semi south, my school sometimes has some good turn outs

last year, i think around 8 went to UVA, 20 to VT, a few to cornell, and 1 or 2 went to one of the service academies

One reason you might not see as many people talking about mediocre school here is because those school with rigorous, required, super-college prep cirriculums changes students. It seems all they can think about senior year is college, they obsess over it when they are waiting for decisons, when they can't do anything. These types of students would most fervently post on message boards about college. ( I know from experience, extreme college-prep cirriculum really can get the best of you at times)

I bet mine is crappier than your's! I go to one with about 1000 students. We have one AP class, and it's AP English IV. No IB classes. Most of the students are current failures of high school, future failures of America :-/

damn... only 1?

well, a mechanic is a decent job, and u don't really need TOO much of an educaiton and just a love of cars

er my school is bad too.. school has 3000 kids and only like 15% have 85 or higher avg... 4 year college = like 5%... i have like a 92.5 avg and im like top 2%.. is this good for college? lol..

Like Korey's school, my school's only AP class is AP English. There are about 2000 students in grades 7-12. I don't know any students who went to Ivy Leagues...a girl who graduated about 10 years ago went to Stanford. One student did apply to Harvard last year, but he was rejected and is at Notre Dame. The students aren't that dumb...the classes are just easy. I am tied for #1 in the junior class right now with six other people...we all have 4.0 uw GPA's!! Although many students are pretty smart, few of them have any ambitions beyond this small town.... I think I'll survive one more year. :)

our valie last year went to ND and #3 went to MIT, but as for the rest, nope, nothing above ND. I don't mind actually. People aren't obsessed over numbers here. I'm not really bothered by the lack of competetion

As long as you're good, and motivated (or have someone who will help to keep you motivated i.e. parents) lack of competition is a great benefit! (in my opinion)

to prove my point, check the PSAT cutoffs, and compare the cutoff between somewhere like marylandd to that of montana or alabama

of course, its crap if you're in some hick town in california (if such a thing exists :) ) and the majority of the state is above average in education

I mean grades wise they're competetive, but we aren't cutthroat at all, and most of us will just go to state schools or out of state average schools. So it's not like 20 people apply to princeton every year or anything

My school was crap. But my class (2001) was one of the smartest classes to go through the high school. Most the students who do go to college end up going to nearby in-state schools or small private schools. The top colleges that students got into while I was there was Cornell, Harvard, and MIT. Me and my brother went to Cornell and another brother-sister group went to MIT and Harvard. But there was rumor about the brother who went to MIT. Some students told me that he didn't know how to start a car. And this is a guy who went on to get a computer engineering degree from MIT.

I see dumb people get 4.0 gpa's a lot... they just do all their work... im really smart... do no work.. and have a crappy gpa :D...Its that simple...

Btw..i think about 6 kids got into harvard.... 30 cornel... 8 mit, and like 1 is so smart he doesnt need college and is going off to nasa(rumor)... hes only 17!!!

3000 kids in my school... Im prolly the only just plain white, poor person in my school... Sucks to be me :(

Actually, I go to a fairly competitve IB school, but our valedictorian was deferred from Harvard. My school is crappy though; school district put the IB program in the worst school in the area to attract better students and make the school better (hasn't really worked...).

Haha we get like 2 people who to an IVY, only like 10 people with a 4.0, lots of dropouts or people who get expelled. i think only 25% go on to college...we have no IB either.

My school has IB - and yet, only 48% of grads go to four-year schools. As for prestigious U's, it sends 3-4 each year to Stanford alone, then like another 4 to other prestigious universities (this year, it was 3 to Stanford, 2 to UPenn, one to Brown, one to Duke, not counting student athletes). Out of a class of like...500. I obviously cannot call my school crappy - but if I need a social group that really values math and science competitions, I go here. No one in my school actively seeks extra competitions or AP self-study. I am the first one to persuade my school to register for AMCs, to register for Chem Olympiad, and to self-study AP exams.

I'ld have to say my school is basically embodies the word crappy. We have like twice the amount of students that are school is supposed to have and the crowding is ridiculous. I'm a senior this year and already at least 200 kids in my class have dropped out. We have some AP classes and what not but the amount of kids who take them is ridiculously small. Um, a friend of mine got into Harvard but other than that no one else in my class is going to an ivy league that i know of. The sad part is he's not even valedictorian. The girl who is isn't going ivy league though she wanted to. anyhow, the school is just overall crappy & I can't wait to get out of it.
