Let's see. I got a 175 on the psats and eventually a 2270 on the sat with some studying and lots of practice tests. I got into Rice and USC (half ride), waitlisted at Duke, Georgetown, and Claremont Mckenna. Hmmm. So I didn't do great (especially considering grades-valedictorian...), but psats are dumb!

if you consider ucsd good, then..

I think I got something like 195 PSATs, but I'm going to Princeton next year.

u know what... i didn't even take the PSATs

and i got a letter in october saying i was commended.
i guess im just that great.

true story..

It's nice to get NMS though, since at some schools you can use it as free money for a laptop or something (especially if you've reached the limit with docking loans).

Commended at 213, going to MIT.

I don't know if Rice counts in your list. I got in and I never even took the PSAT.

My PSAT test told me that I was elegible for NMF consideration, maybe thats commendation, but i'm not sure.

I think I got a 197 on the psat or something, and i did get a 1960 on the SAT, but I did get a 33 on the ACT wich evens things out

Committed to USC, waitlisted at Stanford and Cornell

i didn't do well enough on the PSAT's for national merit, but got well above a 2300 on the SATs (uncommon combination, i know)

i got into those schools

Tonyt88, which of those schools did you choose to attend, and why?

to be more specific on my earlier post, my friend, who wasnt commended, got into MIT, Harvard, Brown, Georgetown, Stanford and Yale.

i wanst tanything and i got accepted 2 notre dame and wake forest

I wasn't anything b/c I'm international, but I got a 213 so I think I would've been commended if I were American. I'm going to Columbia :) Also got into Brown, Penn, Georgetown

At a lot of top colleges, the vast majority of the accepted students weren't NMS's, and I'm sure there were plenty that weren't finalists. Colleges, I think, are more interested in your performance at the time of appication.

I really don't think the PSATs mean much at all, but then again I'm not a fan of any standardized testing. My friend got the best score in our class on the PSAT: 78cr,77m,76w but her grades are Cs, straight across the board. Our projected valedictorian gets A-A+ in everything, taking full IB diploma with 4 Higher Levels and he got 60cr,70m,59w.

197 on the PSAT's ~2300 on the SATs: goin to STANFORD!! accepted at UPenn, Darmouth, Washu, cornell, JHU BME, full ride at state school

i was a nat'l merit finalist but a friend of my who wasn't got into washington in st. louis and Duke

so im assuming all the people who did bad on the PSAT (below 200 i guess) basically just went and studied a lot for the SAT? or did you really just mess up really badly on the PSAT or did you guys just not care? because going from under 200 on PSAT to like 2300 SAT is a big big difference in my opinion

You tend to do better on the SAT just as a result of the extra year or two of reading, math and learning- and your brain maturing. My son didn't study for either and improved a lot on SAT. In my opinion, PSAT should not be prepped for. Unless you are really trying for a NMS scholarship and you will use it, the
PSAT should be taken "cold".

I didn't study at all for the SAT (I probably should have...) and improved by about 140 points from the PSAT (2150 from a 201). I just find the SAT easier than the PSAT.
